Checkers, one of South Africa’s leading supermarket chains, has officially launched its first-ever smart trolley with a built-in scanner and automated checkout. The introduction of the Xpress Trolley marks a significant milestone in retail innovation and is expected to transform the in-store shopping experience for South Africans. This high-tech trolley allows customers to scan their items as they shop, track their spending in real-time, and make payments directly from the trolley, bypassing traditional checkout lines.

The Xpress Trolley is currently being trialled in two locations in Cape Town: Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia. The pilot program is helping the supermarket chain gauge customer feedback before a potential nationwide rollout. The initial rollout includes 10 trolleys at each store, offering shoppers a sneak peek into the future of grocery shopping.

Key Features of the Xpress Smart Trolley

Streamlined Shopping Process with Real-time Scanning

The Xpress Trolley’s built-in scanner makes it possible for customers to scan items as they place them into the trolley. This instant scanning technology allows for a seamless shopping experience. The trolley also features a digital display that shows a running total of the customer’s purchases, making it easier for shoppers to track their spending. With the ability to pay directly from the trolley, customers can bypass the traditional checkout queues, saving valuable time.

The smart trolley also offers personalised promotions and can guide customers to the location of specific items within the store, enhancing the convenience factor. This integration of technology aims to improve both speed and ease for the shopper, eliminating many of the frustrations associated with conventional in-store shopping.

The Impact of Checkers’ Smart Trolley on Retail

Convenience and Efficiency at the Forefront

By launching SA’s first smart trolley, Checkers is not only addressing consumer demands for faster and more efficient shopping experiences but also positioning itself as a frontrunner in South Africa’s rapidly evolving retail sector. The Xpress Trolley will help streamline store operations and make shopping faster and more efficient.

Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Shoprite Group, said:

“This pilot allows us to reimagine the in-store journey using technology for a more frictionless shopping experience.”

This innovation aligns with Checkers’ commitment to staying ahead of retail trends, offering a competitive edge in an increasingly digital world. For many South African consumers, who are used to long checkout lines, the Xpress Trolley provides a much-needed solution.

Test Run and Future Expansion Plans

    The Xpress Trolley’s Pilot Program

The introduction of the Xpress Trolley is part of a wider strategy to test and fine-tune the system before it’s rolled out more widely. The pilot program began in mid-August 2025 at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia, with early feedback being overwhelmingly positive.

“We are excited to be testing this new innovation in a few of our stores,” Schreuder remarked. “The early feedback we’ve received indicates that the convenience of the smart trolley is something that resonates with our customers.”

If successful, Checkers plans to extend the Xpress Trolley to other stores across South Africa. This would be a significant leap in the way grocery stores operate, offering customers an even more tech-driven shopping experience.

The Future of Retail in South Africa

Challenging Competitors in the Retail Space

The introduction of the Xpress Trolley is part of Checkers’ broader strategy to lead South Africa’s retail sector in terms of customer experience. The company aims to become the country’s most profitable omnichannel retailer by embracing cutting-edge technology. This move will help differentiate Checkers from its competitors, such as Woolworths, which has also begun exploring retail innovations.

For South African consumers, the future of shopping may no longer involve long waits at checkout counters. As more retailers embrace technology-driven solutions like Checkers’ smart trolley, the in-store shopping experience is poised for a revolution.

    Transforming the Way We Shop

Checkers’ launch of SA’s first smart trolley with a built-in scanner and automated checkout is a game-changer for South African retail.
