    The Road Accident Fund (RAF) plays a crucial role in South Africa by providing financial assistance to individuals who are injured in motor vehicle accidents. By promoting safer road use and providing timely financial help, the RAF makes sure that accident victims receive fair treatment and compensation for their injuries.

    Job Overview: Claims Officer Responsibilities

    As a Claims Officer, you will support the RAF in managing litigated claims, working closely with RAF Attorneys. Your primary responsibilities will include assessing, negotiating, and settling claims effectively. Your work will be key in ensuring that the RAF handles all cases efficiently and with fairness, helping to reduce legal costs while promoting justice for accident victims.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Preliminary Assessment of Litigated Files
      As a Claims Officer, you will conduct initial assessments of litigated files. You will investigate and evaluate these claims, applying your technical knowledge to ensure fair and timely settlements. Your goal is to resolve cases quickly while keeping legal costs under control.
    2. Evaluating and Settling Claims
      A large part of your job will be assessing and settling various types of claims. These include claims for loss of earnings, general damages, funeral expenses, medical costs, and loss of support. You will make sure that all settlements are cost-effective and finalized as quickly as possible.
    3. Merit and Quantum Assessment
      You will assess the merit of claims and determine their quantum. This will involve appointing external assessors to verify the validity of the claims, ensuring a fair and accurate process.
    4. Support RAF Attorneys in Litigation
      You will provide essential support to RAF Attorneys by supplying them with file contents for trial preparation. You will also evaluate expert medico-legal reports and assess claims for potential settlement. Your role will involve ensuring that the RAF’s litigation strategy aligns with the organization’s overall goals.
    5. Report on Trial Outcomes and Settlements
      You will be responsible for reporting on trial outcomes and settlements, ensuring that all claims are processed according to RAF guidelines. You will also need to monitor ongoing litigation, decide whether further legal action is necessary, and ensure that all claims are properly documented.

    Key Performance Areas

    You will play an important role in minimizing legal costs and ensuring that all claims are handled efficiently. Your primary tasks will include evaluating complex claims, collaborating with legal teams, and overseeing the settlement process. You will also be responsible for ensuring that settlements comply with RAF policies and that all documents are accurate.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, you will need:

    • A four-year law degree or equivalent qualification.
    • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court or as an Advocate.

    Experience

    You must have at least three years of relevant experience in claims or litigation. This experience will help you assess complex claims and handle legal matters effectively.

    Working Environment and Benefits

    This position is based in Menlo Park, Gauteng, and offers an 18-month fixed-term contract. You will receive a Total Employment Cost package that can be tailored to suit your needs.
