Edenvale Murder: Gauteng Couple Handed Life Sentences for Brutally Killing 93-Year-Old Man

A Gauteng couple has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder and robbery of a 93-year-old man by the name Yetsee Chan in his Edenvale home. The South Gauteng High Court convicted Pranavan Moodley (32) and his wife, Samantha Moodley (34), for their roles in the violent attack that led to Chan’s death.

    Brutal Murder: The Shocking Crime

According to Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the crime occurred on September 23, 2020. Chan’s son left home for the bank, leaving the gate open. When he returned just over an hour later, he found his father tied up and severely injured in the passage. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Chan succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

An autopsy report confirmed that Chan died due to severe head and cervical spine injuries sustained during a violent assault. Further investigations led authorities to a pawn shop in Benoni. There were stolen items from Chan’s house were recovered, linking the suspects to the crime.

Sentencing and Evidence of The Gauteng Couple

The South Gauteng High Court sentenced both Pranavan and Samantha Moodley to life imprisonment for the murder. Additionally, Pranavan Moodley received a 15-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, while Samantha Moodley was handed a 12-year sentence.

During the trial, senior State advocate Maro Papachristoforou presented CCTV footage and circumstantial evidence proving the Moodleys involvement. The footage showed the couple entering and leaving the suburb while Chan’s son was away, which played a crucial role in securing their conviction.

    Justice Served

This case emphasises the importance of thorough police investigations and strong prosecutorial efforts in ensuring justice for victims of violent crimes. The sentencing of the Moodleys sends a strong message against crimes targeting vulnerable individuals in South Africa.
