    RolivhuwaBy Rolivhuwa10 July , 2025
How to Apply for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant (Step-by-Step Guide)

The SASSA Care Dependency Grant provides financial support to caregivers of children who have severe and permanent disabilities and need full-time care. This guide will walk you through the application process, step-by-step, making sure you have everything you need to successfully apply for the grant.

What is the SASSA Care Dependency Grant?

The SASSA Care Dependency Grant supports caregivers of children under the age of 18 who have permanent, severe disabilities. These children require constant care. The grant is designed to help caregivers manage the financial burden of providing care. For the 2025/26 period, the grant amount is R2,320 per month per eligible child.

Who Qualifies for the Care Dependency Grant?

Before applying, you must confirm that both you and the child meet the eligibility criteria:

    1. Child’s Eligibility: The child must have a permanent, severe disability that requires full-time care.
    2. Caregiver’s Eligibility: The caregiver must be a South African citizen or permanent resident. In some cases, refugees can also qualify.
    3. Income Threshold: If you are employed, your household income should not exceed a set limit. However, if you are unemployed, this requirement does not apply.

Step 1: Visit the Nearest SASSA Office

You must apply for the Care Dependency Grant in person at your nearest SASSA office. If you are unable to do this due to illness, age, or disability, a trusted family member or friend can submit the application on your behalf. In this case, the representative will need to provide:

    • A letter from you authorizing them to apply.
    • A doctor’s note explaining why you are unable to apply yourself.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

To complete the application, you need to bring the following documents:

    1. South African ID or Refugee Permit: Bring your 13-digit bar-coded South African ID or a refugee permit if applicable.
    2. Child’s Birth Certificate: This document confirms the child’s identity and age.
    3. Medical Assessment Report: A report from a state medical officer or an approved medical practitioner confirming the child’s permanent disability. This is required to show that the child needs full-time care.
    4. Proof of Caregiver Status: If you are not the biological parent, you must provide proof that you are the child’s primary caregiver. This can be an affidavit from the biological parent, a police affidavit, a social worker’s statement, or confirmation from a school principal.
    5. Proof of Unemployment: If you are unemployed, provide proof from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or a discharge certificate.
    6. Court Order for Foster Parents: Foster parents must provide a court order placing the child in their care.
    7. Proof of Maintenance Efforts: If you are the biological parent and the only caregiver, provide evidence that you’ve tried to obtain maintenance from the other parent.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

Once you have the required documents, visit the SASSA office to complete the Care Dependency Grant application form. The SASSA official will assist you if you need help. During this process, you will also undergo an interview and have your fingerprints taken.

    Step 4: Submit Your Application

After completing the application form, submit it along with all required documents to the SASSA official. Once submitted, you will receive a stamped receipt. Keep this receipt in a safe place. Even if your application is declined, the receipt serves as proof of submission.

Step 5: Wait for Processing and Approval

The processing time for a Care Dependency Grant application can take up to three months. SASSA will notify you if they require additional documents. If your application is successful, SASSA will inform you, and payments will be backdated to the date you submitted your application.

If your application is rejected, you can appeal the decision. However, ensuring that all documents are correct will help avoid delays.

Step 6: Receive the Grant Payment

Once approved, you will receive R2,320 per month for each eligible child (2025/26). You can choose to receive the payment either in cash at designated paypoints or electronically via bank transfer. Make sure you track your payments to ensure they are correct.

    Key Points to Remember:
