South Africa’s Pivotal Role in the G20

Assuming the G20 presidency in December 2024, South Africa highlights issues critical to Africa and the world. These include poverty, climate change, energy, debt, and inequality. The country’s leadership aims to place people and sustainable development at the center of the global agenda.

The J20 Summit, newly established in 2018, is an official G20 engagement forum for heads of constitutional and supreme courts. It serves to elevate judicial perspectives within the global policymaking arena. Through the J20, judicial leaders share ideas and innovations addressing challenges. These include judicial independence, digital transformation, climate justice, and access to justice.

    South Africa’s Landmark G20 Presidency

South Africa took over the G20 presidency on 1 December 2024, steering the forum’s direction through to November 2025. The country’s leadership comes at a critical juncture. Global challenges include economic inequality, climate change, food insecurity, energy crises, and debt pressures. These demand urgent multilateral responses. South Africa’s presidency not only elevates Africa’s voice in global affairs but also reinforces its commitment to shaping policies. These policies prioritize developing nations and global solidarity.

    The Theme: Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability

The summit’s theme embodies a vision for “a people-centred, development-oriented and inclusive future.” Solidarity means recognizing that the challenges experienced by one nation affect all, and thus require cooperative solutions. Equality stresses fair treatment and opportunities across countries, regardless of economic status or geography. Sustainability emphasizes meeting current needs while preserving the planet and resources for future generations.

    Key Priorities on the Agenda

South Africa’s presidency has outlined several priority areas:

    • Addressing Poverty and Unemployment: Tackling systemic poverty and high unemployment rates, especially across Africa and other developing regions, remains a top policy concern.
    • Reducing Inequality: Promoting economic and social justice to close gaps between and within nations.
    • Climate Action: Developing robust plans for combating climate change and fostering environmental resilience.
    • Food Security: Ensuring global access to affordable, nutritious food amidst growing population pressures and disrupted supply chains.
    • Energy Transition: Advancing policies to secure sustainable, affordable energy for all.
    • Debt Sustainability: Finding solutions for countries heavily burdened by debt, which limits their economic growth.
    • Infrastructure Development: Enhancing investments in infrastructure to support inclusive growth and regional integration.
    • Global Governance Reform: Advocating for fairer decision-making roles for developing countries within global institutions.

These priorities align closely with South Africa’s National Development Plan and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, “The Africa We Want.” By centring Africa’s development challenges, South Africa aims to enable the continent to progress in line with global sustainability goals.
