Kaizer Chiefs have finally ended their long wait for silverware by securing the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup title with a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in a thrilling Soweto Derby showdown on Saturday afternoon.
Team Changes and Tactical Tweaks
The Amakhosi made a bold goalkeeping switch, opting to bench regular shot-stopper Bruce Bvuma in favour of Brandon Petersen. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers introduced three changes of their own, with Deano Van Rooyen, Nkosinathi Sibisi, and Patrick Maswanganyi slotting into the starting XI after last weekend’s derby.
Early Drama and First-Half Goals
Chiefs wasted little time in stamping their authority. Just eight minutes in, Gaston Sirino coolly slotted home a penalty after Van Rooyen brought down Pule Mmodi inside the box. The early lead, however, did not unsettle Pirates. Ten minutes later, Deon Hotto whipped in a perfect free-kick, which Evidence Makgopa rose to meet at the far post with a thumping header to restore parity.
Midfield Battle and Key Saves
Sirino remained a constant threat for Chiefs but was tightly marked by the industrious Thabang Makhaula, who ensured the Uruguayan had limited influence beyond the opening goal. At the other end, Petersen justified his selection with a smart save at his near post to deny Mohau Nkota’s low-driven effort.
Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates: Second-Half Intensity
Both sides came out with renewed energy in the second half, showing attacking intent but struggling to apply the finishing touch. Nkota came agonisingly close to giving Pirates the lead with a curling effort that clipped the side-netting.
Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi rang the changes with 15 minutes to go, introducing Mduduzi Shabalala and Ashley Du Preez in a double substitution that revitalised the attack. The tactical shift nearly paid off immediately when Mmodi struck the upright from a tight angle.
Maart’s Moment of Glory
With ten minutes remaining, the breakthrough arrived. Captain Yusuf Maart, showing tremendous composure, latched onto a low cross from Shabalala and drilled the ball into the bottom corner from close range to restore Chiefs’ lead.
Pirates fought valiantly in the closing stages and almost snatched an equaliser through a curling free-kick by Kabelo Dlamini, but Petersen again came to his side’s rescue. Chiefs held firm under late pressure to seal the win and lift the Nedbank Cup, ending a decade-long trophy drought.
