The Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court granted Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi bail of R5,000 on Wednesday, 9 July 2025. Authorities had arrested Mnisi in early June for the premeditated murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose. They found the teenager’s mutilated body in an open veld near her home in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, Johannesburg.

    Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions

During the bail hearing, Mnisi pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defence argued that there is insufficient evidence linking him to Fose’s murder. Mnisi claimed that video footage and testimonies, including that of his girlfriend who was expected to testify, would prove his innocence. The court imposed standard bail conditions, including regular reporting to the police, restrictions on contact with witnesses, and travel limitations to ensure his appearance at future court dates.

The State opposed bail, citing concerns over community anger and the risk of Mnisi interfering with witnesses. The investigating officer admitted that investigators have not yet found direct evidence linking Mnisi to the crime and arrested him mainly based on eyewitnesses who identified Mnisi as the last person seen with the victim.

    Background of the Case

Likhona Fose went missing in late May 2025. Authorities discovered her mutilated body a day after her disappearance, shocking the local community. They arrested Mnisi, a 39-year-old parolee with previous convictions for robbery and attempted murder, shortly after finding the body. He has consistently denied involvement in the crime.

    Community Reaction

The granting of bail has been met with mixed reactions. The family of Likhona Fose expressed disappointment and wished the court had denied bail, emphasizing their desire for justice. Meanwhile, the community continues to follow the case closely, concerned about safety and the progress of the investigation.

Next Steps in the Legal Process

Mnisi is expected to appear in court again for further hearings, where additional evidence and witness testimonies will be presented. The case remains ongoing, with the National Prosecuting Authority continuing its investigation and preparation for trial.
