Mamelodi Sundowns have once again etched their name into South African football history, clinching their eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title in the 2024–25 season. Under the guidance of Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso, the team not only secured the championship but also set multiple records, showcasing their dominance in the league.

A Season of Tactical Mastery and Record-Breaking Feats

    • Leadership Transition and Tactical Evolution
      • The season began with Manqoba Mngqithi at the helm, but a series of underwhelming performances led to his departure in December. Miguel Cardoso, appointed thereafter, brought a fresh tactical approach that revitalized the team. His emphasis on structured play and player rotation ensured that the squad remained competitive across all fronts, including domestic cups and continental competitions.
    • Defensive Solidity
      • Mamelodi Sundowns boasted the best defensive record in the league, conceding only 13 goals in 28 matches. This defensive prowess was pivotal in maintaining their unbeaten home record, with 14 wins from 14 games—a new PSL benchmark.
    • Offensive Brilliance
      • Offensively, the team was unparalleled, netting 65 goals—a PSL record for a 28-game season. Lucas Ribeiro led the scoring charts with 16 goals, closely followed by Iqraam Rayners with 14. The duo also topped the assist charts, each contributing nine assists, highlighting their integral roles in the team’s attacking dynamics.

Key Matches That Defined the Season

    1. Sundowns 2–0 SuperSport United (17 September 2024)
      • The season opener set the tone for Sundowns’ campaign. Goals from new signings Iqraam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro secured a comfortable victory, signaling the team’s intent to dominate the league once again.
    2. Kaizer Chiefs 0–4 Sundowns (2 November 2024)
      • A commanding performance against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Knockout quarterfinal showcased Sundowns’ attacking prowess. The comprehensive win not only boosted team morale but also reaffirmed their superiority in South African football.
    3. Stellenbosch 0–1 Sundowns (18 December 2024)
      • In Miguel Cardoso’s first league match in charge, a solitary goal from Rayners secured a hard-fought victory against a resilient Stellenbosch side. The win marked the beginning of a new era under Cardoso’s leadership.
    4. Sundowns 4–1 Orlando Pirates (8 February 2025)
      • A decisive victory over title contenders Orlando Pirates solidified Sundowns’ position at the top of the table. Ribeiro’s brace and goals from Grant Kekana and Teboho Mokoena underscored the team’s attacking depth.
    5. Al Ahly 1–1 Sundowns (25 April 2025)
      • In the CAF Champions League semifinal, a late equalizer in Cairo ensured Sundowns advanced to the final on the away goals rule. The result highlighted the team’s resilience and continental ambitions.

    Individual Contributions and Emerging Talents

Beyond the established stars, several players made significant contributions:

    • Arthur Sales: The Brazilian forward was a versatile asset, contributing eight goals and eight assists across various roles.
    • Jayden Adams: A mid-season acquisition from Stellenbosch FC, Adams became a key figure in the midfield, providing creativity and stability.
    • Malibongwe Khoza: The 21-year-old defender impressed in his debut season, making 15 starts and showcasing maturity beyond his years.
    • Siyabonga Mabena: At just 17, Mabena made his mark early in the season before injuries curtailed his progress. His performances hint at a bright future ahead.
