MTN8 Title in Sight: Ribeiro Says Sundowns Are Going All Out

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro has made it clear that the team is determined to go all the way in this year’s MTN8 competition. This determination comes as they prepare for a crucial quarterfinal showdown against Richards Bay.

Having exited the tournament at the semifinal stage last season after back-to-back defeats to Stellenbosch FC, the Brazilians are eager to rewrite their story. They aim to reclaim the MTN8 crown they last lifted in 2021.

    Redemption on the Horizon

Speaking ahead of their quarterfinal clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday evening, Ribeiro emphasized the team’s commitment and hunger to win.

“This is a very important game, and we must give everything we have,” said Ribeiro. “We’ll fight until the final whistle to make sure we secure a positive result. Our goal is not just to win this match but to lift the cup. We’re excited for the challenge and can’t wait to reconnect with the Yellow Nation.”

    Backed by the Fans

Ribeiro also called on the club’s supporters to rally behind the team as they kick off their 2025/26 PSL campaign. The forward, who has been a key player for Sundowns since his arrival, stressed the importance of fan support during this critical stage of the competition.

“We need the energy and backing of our fans. Their presence gives us extra strength. It’s the beginning of a long season. Starting with a win in the MTN8 would be a big statement,” he added.

    Aiming for a Strong Start

The quarterfinal clash is scheduled to kick off at 6pm at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. Richards Bay is known for their resilience and compact defensive structure. They won’t make it easy for the Tshwane giants. However, Sundowns are expected to field a strong lineup. They aim to secure a place in the semifinals of the lucrative competition.

Having last tasted MTN8 glory in 2021, when they edged Cape Town City in a thrilling final, Sundowns are eager to end their recent drought in the tournament. The team’s dominant league performances in recent years have not always translated to cup success. However, Ribeiro believes that can change this season.

    One Step at a Time

“We’re taking it one match at a time, but our intention is clear we want to win,” said Ribeiro. “The MTN8 is a trophy that holds a lot of value, and it’s time we bring it back to Chloorkop.”

As Sundowns look to make a strong statement in their first competitive fixture of the new season, all eyes will be on how they handle the pressure. Additionally, whether their “all-in” mentality will finally lead them back to MTN8 glory.
