    Eligibility, Benefits, and How to Apply For The R500 Million Spaza Shop Funding

    The South African government has officially launched applications for the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund (SSSF) – a major opportunity for local township and rural spaza shop owners to upgrade, expand, and sustain their businesses. This strategic initiative is designed to boost the growth of small-scale retail businesses and increase the participation of South African-owned spaza shops in the local retail trade.

    If you’re a small business owner operating in a rural or township area, this fund could be a game-changer. Here’s everything you need to know about the fund, who qualifies, how it works, and how to apply.

    What is the Spaza Shop Support Fund (SSSF)?

    The SSSF aims to empower small-scale spaza shop owners with access to funding, training, business development support, and technology. With up to R300,000 in financial support per shop, the program enables local entrepreneurs to compete more effectively with major retailers.

    Key objectives of the fund include:

    • Financial support through grants and low-interest loans
    • Skills development and training programs
    • Support for compliance with hygiene and regulatory standards
    • Promotion of digital tools such as inventory systems and payment platforms
    • Enabling bulk purchasing benefits through wholesale aggregation

    Who Qualifies for the Spaza Shop Support Fund?

    To qualify for the SSSF, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be a South African citizen or a naturalised citizen before 1994
    • Operate a spaza shop in township or rural areas within South Africa
    • Register the business with the local municipality in line with by-laws
    • Have or obtain SARS registration (with a 6-month grace period allowed)
    • For funding above R80,000, register with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) within six months
    • Comply with health and safety and other relevant regulations
    • Be actively involved in managing the spaza shop

    Priority will be given to:

    • Entrepreneurs aged 18–35
    • Female-owned businesses
    • Owners with disabilities

    Funding Packages: What’s on Offer

    Funding up to R100,000

    This package includes:

    • R40,000 stock grant via designated delivery partners
    • R50,000 for assets and infrastructure (includes security, shelving, refrigeration, etc.)
    • R100,000 in training covering digital literacy, food safety, business compliance, and POS systems

    Funding between R100,000 – R300,000

    For registered and compliant businesses, this advanced support includes:

    • R40,000 stock grant
    • R250,000 for assets/infrastructure, split 50/50 between grant and zero-interest loan
    • R100,000 training in business, digital tools, and health compliance

    How to Apply for the Spaza Shop Support Fund

    Applications for the SSSF are now open and can be submitted through the official portals of the NEF and SEFDA. Here’s how to apply:

    1. Visit any of the following websites:

    2. Create an account on the SEFA portal: https://systemsnew.sefa.org.za/SMMEPortal/
    3. Complete the online registration form
    4. Upload all required documents
    5. Read and accept the terms and conditions, then submit your application
