Miracle Recovery: Gauteng Learner Returns to Sebokeng Hospital After Life-Saving Treatment

In a heartwarming and inspiring story, 11-year-old Grade 5 learner Sandile Hela returned to Sebokeng Hospital in August 2025, not as a patient, but as a philanthropist. Over a year ago, Sandile was critically injured in a scholar transport accident. Thanks to the exceptional care he received, he made a miraculous recovery. His return to the hospital, bringing gifts for current patients, is a testament to the impact of healthcare and the power of resilience.

The Devastating Accident and Critical Care

On 28 May 2024, Sandile was involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident. The accident left him with multiple fractures in both legs, one arm, kidney trauma, severe bruising, and significant blood loss. His condition was critical, and he was rushed to Sebokeng Hospital, where medical teams worked tirelessly to stabilize him. His mother, Nomsa Hela, recalls that he was “almost lifeless” when he arrived at the hospital.

Despite the severe nature of his injuries, Sandile received expert care in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Children’s Ward, and various other departments. These included the Theatre, X-Ray, and Physiotherapy departments. The teamwork and professionalism of the hospital staff were pivotal in his recovery.

    Intensive Treatment and Rehabilitation

Sandile’s recovery was a long and challenging process. Over the span of 11 months, he underwent extensive treatment and rehabilitation. The hospital staff, who had developed a close bond with Sandile and his family, were integral to his journey. Their compassion and dedication at every step were crucial. Their efforts allowed him to regain strength and mobility, and he was eventually discharged in April 2025.

This recovery was described as a miracle, with Sandile walking out of the hospital on his own feet, a moment that will forever be cherished by his family.

    Returning to Give Back

On 7 August 2025, a year after his discharge, Sandile and his family returned to Sebokeng Hospital. This time, however, they were not there for medical care; instead, they brought gifts for the young patients in the Paediatric Ward. Sandile’s mother, Nomsa, spoke about the importance of giving back, saying, “We came back not just to say thank you, but to show other families that healing is possible. Sebokeng Hospital gave us hope when we had none.”

During this visit, Sandile donated fleece blankets, teddy bears, and toys to the current patients. His gesture was not only a thank you but also a way to inspire hope and healing. It aimed to help other families facing difficult circumstances.

The Role of Public Healthcare in Sandile’s Recovery

Sandile Hela’s story exemplifies the importance of public healthcare systems in South Africa. His recovery, aided by Sebokeng Hospital, is a shining example of how dedicated healthcare professionals can make a life-saving difference. The hospital’s team worked relentlessly, demonstrating expertise, compassion, and a commitment to improving the lives of their patients.

    MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko’s Recognition

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, praised Sandile’s recovery as a powerful example of what public healthcare can achieve. She emphasized the role of compassionate healthcare in transforming lives. Additionally, she spoke about the importance of investing in quality healthcare services. During the Gauteng Department of Health’s Budget Vote 2025, Sandile and his family were invited as special guests to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. There, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko highlighted the positive impact public healthcare has on the community.

“This is what a caring health system looks like. It saves lives, restores dignity, and gives families like the Hela family a second chance,” said MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.

A Story of Resilience and Giving Back

Sandile’s return to Sebokeng Hospital is not just a story of survival but one of resilience and hope. It highlights the transformative power of healthcare systems when combined with the strength of the human spirit. From a critically injured child to a young philanthropist, Sandile’s journey is a testament to the life-changing impact of healthcare providers and the strength of families and communities.
