Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has made history by matching Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing Premier Soccer League (PSL) goal record. On Wednesday night, Shalulile found the back of the net in Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Magesi FC, bringing his tally to 129 goals in South African football.

The 31-year-old Namibian international is now on the verge of becoming the highest goal scorer in PSL history, a feat he’s set to accomplish with fewer appearances than Nomvethe, who previously held the record.

    Shalulile’s Impressive Record

Shalulile’s journey to this remarkable achievement began when he scored 27 goals for Highlands Park before making the switch to Sundowns in 2020. Since joining the Pretoria-based club, he has netted 102 goals in 208 appearances, and with his latest goal, he is now only one shy of surpassing Nomvethe’s record.

What makes Shalulile’s feat even more impressive is the efficiency with which he reached the milestone. Despite fewer competitive matches compared to Nomvethe, Shalulile has managed to stay at the top of his game, showcasing consistency and skill in every season.

The Key Moment Against Magesi FC

In a match that saw Sundowns secure a crucial three points, Shalulile’s goal was a moment of brilliance. He scored from outside the box to bring himself level with Nomvethe’s record, a milestone that many fans and analysts have been eagerly anticipating.

Sundowns’ win was built on a solid team performance. After Magesi hit the woodwork in the first half, Sundowns capitalized on their opportunity when Jayden Adams scored the opener in the 73rd minute. The match was sealed when Shalulile’s late goal doubled the advantage in the 87th minute, leaving Magesi with no way back.

    Shalulile’s Ambition for the Future

The Namibian striker’s determination doesn’t end with equaling Nomvethe’s record. He has made it clear that he is aiming for even more. “My plan is to score many more goals this season. I just need to get my confidence back,” said Shalulile. His goal target for the season? A remarkable 25 goals, which would help Sundowns extend their lead in the race for a ninth consecutive league title.

This ambition has only added to the growing speculation surrounding his future. Despite rumours suggesting that Shalulile may seek a move to Europe, his focus remains firmly on helping Sundowns achieve more success in domestic competitions and beyond.

What This Means for Sundowns and PSL

Shalulile’s achievement is not just a personal milestone, but a testament to Sundowns‘ dominance in South African football. As the club continues its quest for glory in both the PSL and the CAF Champions League, having a player of Shalulile’s calibre on their side will undoubtedly be crucial.

For fans of the PSL, Shalulile’s record-chasing journey adds an exciting new chapter to the league’s history. The question now is not if he will surpass Nomvethe’s record, but when.
