Toyota has officially lifted the veil on the latest addition to its legendary Land Cruiser family, the all-new Land Cruiser FJ. The global reveal took place ahead of its public debut at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, where enthusiasts will soon see the rugged SUV up close for the first time.

A Modern Classic Born for Adventure

Developed under the theme of “Freedom and Joy,” Toyota says the new FJ represents a modern reinterpretation of the brand’s 70-year legacy of durability, reliability, and off-road dominance. Compact yet capable, the new FJ aims to attract a new generation of adventurers who value freedom, individuality, and exploration.

Toyota described the vehicle as “compact, capable, and designed for individual expression.” The company reaffirms that it remains true to the Land Cruiser spirit that has earned global respect across decades.

South Africa Could Be Among the First Markets

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) confirmed that the FJ is “under consideration” for release in the country. TSAM noted that South Africa would be “a fitting home for a vehicle built on the values of freedom, exploration, and reliability.”

Should the model make it to our roads, it will join a proud lineup of Land Cruisers. The cruisers have long been favourites among farmers, adventurers, and off-road aficionados.

    Distinctive Design and Rugged Character

Visually, the new Land Cruiser FJ takes a bold leap into the modern era while maintaining its retro-inspired roots. Its compact proportions and squared-off stance give it a strong road presence, drawing comparisons to the Suzuki Jimny 5-door or a scaled-down Land Rover Defender.

The FJ’s face features a blacked-out bumper, a minimalist rectangular grille, and LED headlights with distinctive daytime running lights. Two headlamp designs, one rectangular and one circular, have been spotted, suggesting a special “First Edition” version may be on the cards, echoing the approach used for the new Toyota Prado.

Built on Toyota’s IMV platform, the SUV has a shorter wheelbase and high ground clearance, complemented by flared wheel arches that allow for large off-road tyres, ideal for tackling rugged terrain.

    Inside the Cabin

The interior design mirrors the Prado’s clean and functional aesthetic, combining modern tech with practicality. A three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, dual digital displays, circular air vents, and a chunky gear lever add to the robust yet refined feel.

There’s also a physical handbrake, a rarity in today’s SUVs, reflecting Toyota’s focus on mechanical control over full digitalisation — a nod to traditionalists.

    Advanced Technology and Safety

Toyota confirmed that the new FJ will be equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense Suite, offering advanced driver assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, parking sensors, tyre-pressure monitoring, and hill descent control.
