Weather Alert: SAWS Issues Heatwave Alert as Temperatures Soar Above 40°C

    Nomthandazo NtisaBy Nomthandazo Ntisa26 October , 2025
    Weather Alert:

Scorching Heat Set To Grip Parts Of Limpopo And Mpumalanga

South Africans can expect another sweltering weekend. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heatwave alert for Limpopo and Mpumalanga, warning of dangerously high temperatures on Sunday.

The Limpopo Valley and Lowveld will bear the brunt, with the mercury expected to shoot past 40°C. Hot, dry air and a stubborn high-pressure system are driving the heat.

People are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during midday, and keep children and pets cool. Workers who spend time outside should wear hats, apply sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade. The combination of heat and low humidity could trigger dehydration and heatstroke within minutes.

Fire Danger Warnings For Northern Provinces

The heatwave brings another risk — fire. SAWS has issued fire danger warnings for North West, Limpopo, Gauteng, north-western Mpumalanga, and the eastern Free State.

Dry grass, gusty winds, and soaring temperatures make conditions ripe for runaway fires. Officials have asked residents not to light open flames or drop cigarette butts on the ground. Farmers should keep firefighting tools ready and ensure livestock have access to shade and water.

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says farmers must stay alert and work together to contain flare-ups. Fires can spread in minutes when winds pick up.

Cooler, Wetter Weather Expected In The South

While the north bakes, the south is cooling down. SAWS predicts rain for the southern and central parts of the country, with an 80% chance along the south-eastern coast.

The Western and Eastern Cape will stay cloudy and cool, with scattered showers. KwaZulu-Natal can expect thundershowers in the south and warm, humid weather in the north.

Provincial Weather Outlook For Sunday, 26 October

Gauteng: Hot and partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers in the south. UVB index: high.

Mpumalanga: Partly cloudy and hot with thundershowers in the south. Lowveld temperatures near 40°C.

Limpopo: Fine, dry, and very hot in the Lowveld and Limpopo Valley.

North West: Hot, windy, and partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers over central areas. Fire danger remains high.

Free State: Warm to hot and partly cloudy with scattered afternoon showers. Dry in the far west.

Northern Cape: Hot and windy. Cooler conditions will move into the south later.

Western Cape: Cloudy and cool with scattered showers along the Garden Route and Overberg. UVB index: high.

Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cold with widespread coastal showers and scattered inland thundershowers.

KwaZulu-Natal: Cloudy and cool with thundershowers in the south. Coastal winds will shift from south-westerly to south-easterly in the evening.

SAWS Urges Caution As Summer Approaches

October’s transition from spring to summer often brings extreme weather swings. SAWS has urged the public to stay informed and take the warnings seriously.

Follow official weather alerts and local radio updates. Travelers should pack water and plan for delays caused by storms or heat.

With rising temperatures and shifting rainfall, South Africa is entering another unpredictable season. Stay alert, stay hydrated, and stay safe.
