Weather Alert: Cloudy Skies and Light Showers Expected Across South Africa

South African Weather Conditions, Alerts & Updates for 24 July 2025

South Africa faces a varied and dynamic weather landscape on Thursday, 24 July 2025, with several provinces experiencing fog, thunderstorms, cold conditions, and rainfall. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) and multiple recent reports have issued pertinent weather warnings to inform the public and relevant authorities about potential risks over the coming days. This article provides a province-by-province update on prevailing weather conditions, alerts, and safety advice.

SEE FULL FORECAST: Weather Forecast South Africa, 24 July 2025

    National Overview

A large upper- and lower-level trough persists over the country’s interior, driving isolated showers and thundershowers in several regions. Morning fogs are reducing visibility across key areas. Meanwhile, a cold front sweeping over the south-west is bringing cooler temperatures and showers to the Western and Southern Cape. Numerous Yellow Level 2 warnings remain active, particularly for severe thunderstorms, disruptive rains, and localized flooding.

    Gauteng

Partly cloudy, cool, isolated showers and thundershowers. UVB index high. Take sun protection precautions.

    Western Cape

Cloudy and cold, especially in inland areas. Morning fog in the Overberg and southern interior. No severe warnings, but motorists should watch for reduced visibility in fog-prone areas. South-west coastal areas will feel the incoming cold front, bringing isolated showers and cooler temperatures.

    Northern Cape

Cloudy with morning fog along the coast/interior, otherwise fine and cool to cold. Isolated showers in the east

The Northern Cape remains mostly dry and cool, with no significant weather warnings issued for 24 July.

    Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape residents should prepare for scattered showers and possible thundershowers, particularly in the northeast. The weather remains cool and cloudy, with some areas experiencing damp conditions.

While no official warnings are presently active for severe weather, locals are advised to monitor updates due to possible localized rainfall and slippery roads.

    KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal continues to face unsettled weather. The northern parts, including Durban and Pietermaritzburg, recorded disruptive rains and a Yellow Level 2 Warning extending into 24 July, raising concerns over localised flooding and poor driving conditions.

Heavy downpours, strong winds, and lightning are expected in isolated thunderstorms primarily over the western and southern regions of the province. Residents should stay vigilant, particularly near rivers and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

    North West

Partly cloudy, cold to cool with isolated showers/thundershowers. Windy conditions in the far west; local travel may be affected

    Free State

The Free State will experience cool, partly cloudy weather with isolated thundershowers affecting the eastern and central parts. SAFS warnings note the possibility of deteriorating road conditions due to localized heavy rains.

Windy conditions in the extreme west. Partly cloudy and cold to cool with isolated showers/thundershowers. Light snow remains possible near the Lesotho border, travelers should monitor updates

    Mpumalanga

Morning fog in the southeast. Otherwise, partly cloudy, cold to cool; warm in the Lowveld. Isolated showers/thundershowers for most regions

    Limpopo

Partly cloudy and cool, warm in the Lowveld. Isolated showers in the south. No flood or severe wind warnings.

    Important Reminders

    • Fog reduces visibility considerably during early mornings in several provinces. Use low-beam headlights and allow extra travel time.
    • Thunderstorms may bring sudden heavy rainfall and wind gusts. Stay indoors during severe activity and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone zones.
    • Flooding risk remains high in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and parts of Gauteng. Avoid crossing flooded bridges or roads.
