As South Africa moves into Youth Day, residents should prepare for a mix of weather conditions across the provinces on Monday, 16 June 2025. While much of the country will experience fine, cool to warm weather, parts of the southern regions will see partly cloudy skies with isolated rain and showers.

Overview of Weather Conditions Across South Africa

A weak cold front is expected to influence the southwestern coastal areas, bringing cooler temperatures and some light rain. Meanwhile, the interior and northern provinces will generally remain dry but cold, especially during early mornings and nights.

Temperatures across the country will range between 12°C and 18°C, typical for June, with daytime highs reaching up to 20°C in some coastal areas due to berg winds.

    Provincial Weather Updates and Warnings

    Gauteng

Gauteng will experience cool to mild weather with mostly clear skies. Daytime temperatures will reach about 16°C to 18°C, while early mornings and nights will be chilly, dropping to around 4°C. No rain is expected, but residents should prepare for cold mornings and possible fog in low-lying areas.

    Western Cape and Southern Cape

The Western Cape will experience partly cloudy conditions with isolated showers, especially along the southern coastal belt. A weak cold front will slide over the southwestern coast, bringing cooler weather and light rain on Youth Day (16 June 2025). Temperatures in Cape Town are expected to reach a maximum of around 17°C, with lows dipping to around 7°C at night

Residents should note the possibility of slippery roads due to rain and exercise caution while driving. No severe weather warnings have been issued, but the cooler conditions may affect outdoor activities.

    Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape will see cold overnight temperatures with a chance of light frost in some interior areas. Daytime weather will be mostly clear with sunny spells, although some fog patches may occur in valleys early in the morning. Maximum temperatures will hover around 16°C to 18°C.

No significant weather warnings are currently in place for this province.

    KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal will enjoy fine weather with warm temperatures, particularly along the coast where highs may reach the low 20s Celsius. The interior will be cooler, with no significant rainfall expected. The risk of heatwaves or heat strokes is low, given the moderate temperatures.

    Northern Cape

The Northern Cape will remain dry and cold, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 18°C. However, extremely high fire danger conditions persist in the Richtersveld Municipality due to dry and windy conditions. Residents and visitors in this area should exercise extreme caution to prevent wildfires.

    Free State and North West

Both provinces will experience cold mornings with light frost possible in some areas. Daytime weather will be fine and cool, with temperatures between 12°C and 18°C. No rainfall or severe weather warnings are expected.

    Limpopo and Mpumalanga

These provinces will see mostly clear skies with cool temperatures. Some light drizzle or isolated showers may occur in northeastern Limpopo due to a low-pressure system over Botswana. Daytime highs will be around 16°C to 18°C, with chilly mornings.

    Northern Regions and Lowveld

The Lowveld area will experience cold mornings with light drizzle possible. Winds will be moderate south-westerly. Temperatures will range between 16°C and 18°C, with low UV levels reducing sunburn risk.

    Wind and Fire Danger Warnings

Moderate south-westerly winds will prevail along the southern coastal regions, contributing to cooler temperatures and isolated showers. Meanwhile, berg winds will bring warmer conditions to parts of the Western and Southern Cape coasts, with temperatures approaching 27°C to 30°C in some areas.

The highest fire danger warning remains in the Northern Cape’s Richtersveld Municipality, where extremely dry and windy conditions increase wildfire risk. No other provinces currently have active fire danger warnings, but residents should remain vigilant, especially in rural and dry areas.

    Flood, Snow, and Fog Alerts

No major flood warnings have been issued for any provinces at this time. Snowfall is not expected, although cold overnight temperatures and light frost may occur in the interior provinces.

Fog patches are likely in valleys and low-lying areas in the Free State and Mpumalanga, particularly during early mornings. Drivers should use fog lights and exercise caution on roads in these areas.
