FlySafair has confirmed that at least 8% of its Monday flights will be grounded. This occurred despite initially assuring customers that its operations would remain unaffected by the industrial action. The situation escalated when the airline announced a lockout of its pilots. This intensified the stand-off with the union and threw many travellers’ plans into uncertainty.
Talks Collapse Amid Ongoing Pay Dispute
The root of the conflict lies in unresolved disagreements over salaries and working conditions. Discussions between the airline and Solidarity have broken down. The union is accusing the low-cost carrier of refusing to engage in meaningful negotiations.
Solidarity’s spokesperson, Helgard Cronje, criticised FlySafair’s response to their one-day strike notice. He called the company’s decision to enforce a seven-day lockout “reckless” and “irresponsible towards the public.” Cronje added that the lockout, which could be extended to two weeks, forced the union to expand its strike action. This was to match the airline’s aggressive stance.
FlySafair Strike: Union Urges Airline to Return to Talks
While Solidarity initially hoped the one-day strike would pressure FlySafair to return to the negotiating table, the company’s countermeasure has only deepened the standoff. According to Cronje, pilots are demanding wage adjustments to address salary cuts imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are also pushing back against changes to employment terms and are calling for better rest periods and time with their families.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has offered to facilitate further talks between the two parties. Solidarity has accepted this offer, but FlySafair has yet to agree. This leaves little hope of a resolution in the immediate term.
Impact on Flyers and Flight Operations
Travellers are already feeling the effects of the impasse. Though FlySafair claims the strike will only impact a fraction of its daily operations, many customers are anxious about possible last-minute cancellations or delays. The airline has advised passengers to check their flight status via the Manage Booking portal on its website. They can reschedule at no additional cost if affected.
Despite the disruption, FlySafair has reiterated its dedication to protecting the long-term sustainability of the airline while also acknowledging the rights of its workforce. The airline, however, has not budged from its current wage proposal. This proposal was rejected by 84% of Solidarity members.

The escalating tensions have drawn wider attention from within the travel industry, with concerns mounting about the potential ripple effects on local tourism. This is especially relevant during peak business and holiday travel periods. For now, affected passengers are left hoping for a swift breakthrough in negotiations.
