Application Surge and Oversubscription
By 21 August 2025, the GDE recorded 738,445 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 across Gauteng, with 315,865 applications for Grade 1 and 422,580 for Grade 8. Education MEC Matome Chiloane has urged parents to apply promptly to avoid disappointment.

- Laerskool Akasia (Tshwane West): 1,304 applications for 250 spaces.
- Palmridge Primary (Ekurhuleni): 1,172 applications for 200 spaces.
- Alston Primary (Ekurhuleni): 1,158 applications for 130 spaces.
- Stoneridge Primary (Ekurhuleni): 1,136 applications for 250 spaces.
- Sandtonview Combined School (Johannesburg East): 850 applications for 270 spaces.
- Kaalfontein Primary: 828 applications for 300 spaces.
High Schools Facing Intense Competition
- Hoërskool Langenhoven (Tshwane West): Received 3,122 applications for just 310 places.
- Alberton High School (Ekurhuleni): 2,590 applications for 200 available spaces.
- Parktown Boys’ High (Johannesburg): 2,283 applications for 180 spaces.
- Boksburg High (Ekurhuleni): 2,168 applications with 300 spots.
- Hoërskool Akasia: 2,150 applications with 230 spaces.
Measures to Address Capacity Challenges
The Gauteng Department of Education acknowledges the ongoing oversubscription challenges. Approximately 277 out of 1,408 primary schools and 221 out of 674 high schools have received more applicants than they can admit.
To mitigate this, the GDE has:
- Constructed 19 new or satellite schools in recent years (2024 and 2025).
- Provided 786 mobile classrooms across 223 schools.
- Continues efforts to expand infrastructure to accommodate growing demand.
Application Documentation and Placement
Parents are reminded to complete applications fully, including submitting proof of address and other documentation by the deadline of 29 August 2025. Failure to do so risks exclusion from placement offers.
The placement process is scheduled to begin on 16 October 2025, with placement notifications sent via SMS. The GDE encourages patients and preparedness as offers are rolled out.
