PostBank plays a vital role in the distribution of SASSA grants to millions of South Africans. Every month, SASSA processes approximately 19 million grants, with a significant portion of beneficiaries relying on PostBank accounts.
As the agreement is nearing its end, beneficiaries feared possible disruptions in receiving their SASSA grants. However, Minister Tolashe confirmed that payments will continue smoothly without interruption.
“The termination of this agreement will not disrupt the payment of SASSA grants to beneficiaries who use PostBank,” Tolashe stated. “Beneficiaries will continue to receive their payments just as they have before.”

Why the Agreement is Ending
The decision to end the partnership stems from PostBank’s failure to meet several contractual obligations, including non-compliance with the South African Reserve Bank order to replace gold cards.
The SARB later suspended this process indefinitely, leading to the decision not to renew the agreement.
Under the terms of the Master Services Agreement, either party can terminate the contract with 18 months’ notice. SASSA exercised this option, understanding that the agreement no longer serves its original purpose.
Despite the conclusion of the agreement, Minister Tolashe reassured beneficiaries that this administrative change would not affect the distribution of SASSA grants.

Key Information for Social Grant Beneficiaries
Minister Tolashe provided essential information for beneficiaries, ensuring they understand how the transition will affect them:
- Grant Payments Remain Unchanged: Beneficiaries who receive social grants through Postbank will continue to have their payments deposited into their accounts as usual, using both gold and black Postbank cards.
- No Immediate Changes to Banking Services: Postbank clients will not see immediate changes to their banking services. Any adjustments to service conditions will be communicated directly to beneficiaries.
- Option to Switch Banks: Beneficiaries have the option to change banks at any time by notifying SASSA. The process is simple and straightforward.
- Ongoing Support from SASSA: SASSA will continue to monitor the situation and ensure grant payments remain secure, working with SARB to protect beneficiaries.

Minister Tolashe Calls for Calm and Clarity
Minister Tolashe urged that the issue not be politicized, as doing so could create unnecessary fear and confusion among social grant recipients. She stressed that stability is essential for beneficiaries, who rely on these payments for their financial security.
“If we politicize this transition, we risk creating panic among the very people we are mandated to serve,” said Minister Tolashe. “Social grant recipients deserve clarity, not confusion or fear.”
The Importance of Social Grants in South Africa
Social grants are a critical lifeline for many South Africans, with approximately 19 million grants processed each month, totaling R22.4 billion. Around 3 million beneficiaries use Postbank accounts for their payments, including social grant recipients and those receiving Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress.
SASSA ensures that the disbursement process remains stable, no matter which financial institution processes the payments. The government remains committed to ensuring that grant payments are distributed smoothly, without disruption.
What’s Next for Social Grant Payments?
Minister Tolashe concluded by affirming that Postbank remains a fully licensed financial institution, and no new service provider is being appointed. Beneficiaries will continue to receive their social grants in their existing Postbank accounts or any other bank account they choose to use.
“Postbank will remain a functioning bank. No client needs to switch banks unless they choose to do so,” she concluded.
The expiration of the SASSA-PostBank agreement does not signal any disruption in the payment of social grants. Minister Tolashe has reassured South Africans that social grant payments will continue seamlessly, and beneficiaries can rest assured that their financial support remains intact. This transition is an administrative matter and will not negatively affect grant recipients.
