Experience Nature for Free: National Gardens Week 2026 Returns to South Africa
18 February 2026, Pretoria. South Africa is a land of unmatched natural beauty, and soon, you can experience its world-class floral heritage without spending a cent. Following the resounding success of its inaugural edition, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is proud to announce the return of National Gardens Week, taking place from 9 to 15 March 2026. This initiative invites locals to reconnect with the soil, the trees, and the wildlife that make our country the third most biodiverse nation on Earth.
This year, SANBI is offering free access to South African citizens and residents to its national botanical and zoological gardens. The primary goal is to showcase not just the famous landmarks, but also the lesser-known gardens that serve as vital lungs for our urban centres. By opening these gates, SANBI aims to foster a deeper emotional connection between the public and our unique natural heritage.
Your Free Passport to South Africa’s National Gardens

From Monday to Friday (9–13 March 2026), South Africans can enjoy free entry to the country’s premier green spaces. Iconic locations such as Kirstenbosch in Cape Town, Walter Sisulu in Roodepoort, and the Pretoria National Botanical Garden are all participating. This year’s theme, “Your free passport to nature: celebrate, restore, and protect all life,” highlights the urgent need for conservation in a changing climate.
As a global biodiversity hotspot, South Africa is home to over 95,000 known species, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. These National Gardens offer an opportunity for citizens of all ages and backgrounds to experience this natural wealth first-hand. “Last year’s response showed us that South Africans are hungry for these connections with nature, and we’re excited to open our gates once again,” says Shonisani Munzhedzi, CEO of SANBI. These spaces are more than just parks; they are living classrooms and places of restoration where people can rediscover their bond with the environment.
Conservation and Discovery at the National Zoological Garden
The celebration extends beyond flora to include our incredible fauna. The Pretoria Zoo (National Zoological Garden) will offer free entry during the work week (9–13 March). However, the festivities continue through the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, 14 and 15 March 2026, a special discounted entrance fee of only R26 will apply for South African residents.
This nominal fee continues the celebration of the zoo’s 126-year legacy, marking more than a century of conservation, research, and public education in the heart of Pretoria. At the zoo, interactive educational stations will highlight a sobering reality: 15 per cent of the species housed there are currently threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. These exhibits reinforce the vital role that every citizen plays in conservation action.
A Countrywide Celebration of Biodiversity and Culture
Across SANBI’s network, visitors can look forward to a rich programme that blends learning with relaxation. In the Kwa-Zulu Natal National Botanical Garden in Pietermaritzburg, Acrobranch will offer free access to its outdoor adventure course. Additionally, the garden will host free plant propagation courses and guided tours for those looking to green their own thumbs.
At Kirstenbosch, set against the iconic slopes of Table Mountain, the experience merges nature with culture. While weekday visitors explore the famous “Boomslang” treetop walkway for free, they can also engage with the Happy by Nature indigenous nursery. This botanical studio is offering a 5% discount on all indigenous plants during the week, alongside free five-minute educational talks on how to care for plants that support local bird and insect life.
Furthermore, the Kirstenbosch Gift Shop will host a seasonal clearance sale with discounts of up to 50%, while the Kirstenbosch Bookshop will offer 15% off selected titles. These initiatives ensure that visitors can take a piece of South African nature home with them.
