SA Chefs Village Returns to Hostex 2026 as the Culinary Centre of Gravity

When the doors to the Sandton Convention Centre swing open from 8 to 10 March, the professional culinary community will have one clear destination. The SA Chefs Village once again anchors the energy of the show, serving as the definitive “centre of gravity” for the industry. This year, the village brings three high-octane days of live cooking, rigorous competition, and essential industry dialogue to the heart of the Hostex 2026 exhibition floor.

Formerly known as “The Skillery,” the space has undergone a significant evolution to better reflect the diverse nature of the modern profession. While technique remains vital, the current format prioritises community and shared growth. As Chef Coo Pillay, President of the South African Chefs Association (SA Chefs), explains, “The Village recognises that chefs don’t operate in isolation. We grow by learning from each other, by competing, by debating, and by sharing space.”
A Three-Day Programme of Innovation and Competition

The SA Chefs Village comprises two distinct zones: The Studio and the Challenge Arena. Together, they deliver a continuous flow of professional activity from 09:00 to 15:00 daily. Each day carries a unique thematic focus, ensuring that every visit offers fresh insights into the South African food landscape.
- Sunday: Modern Kitchen Innovation: The week kicks off with a look at plant-forward menu development and evolving flavour profiles. Attendees can witness the Zero Waste Breakfast Challenge, where practical creativity meets the ticking clock.
- Monday: Sustainability and Social Impact: This day shifts the spotlight to responsible sourcing and food waste. In a powerful display of “food for good,” the Community Kitchen challenges transform rescued ingredients into nutritious meals. Furthermore, the Challenge Arena will celebrate women in culinary leadership, highlighting both technical mastery and mentorship.
- Tuesday: Excellence and Celebration: The stakes reach their peak on the final day. The Ready Steady Cook Grand Finale concludes the event, followed by awards that honour the craft and the dedicated individuals who carry the industry forward.
High-Stakes Kitchen Theatre: The Iron Chef Challenge

At the very heart of the Hostex 2026 programme is the headline showdown: the Iron Chef Challenge. This isn’t just a demonstration; it is a live culinary battle in its purest form. Visiting chefs are invited to step into the arena to challenge established SA Chefs Village Iron Chefs, including Doug Momberg, Fanie Sebapo, and Devandra Narismulu.
Cooked head-to-head under intense time pressure, these battles test instinct, composure, and raw creativity. For the challengers, it is a rare opportunity to measure their skills against industry giants. For the spectators, it provides high-energy kitchen theatre that captures the true intensity of a professional kitchen environment. Additionally, the village will support SA Food Stories, a vodcast collaboration between FNB, Bidfood, and SA Chefs that celebrates the people shaping our local food culture.
Celebrating 40 Years of Hospitality Excellence
This year marks a prestigious milestone as Hostex celebrates 40 years of serving the hospitality and foodservice sectors. For four decades, this expo has been the premier meeting place for innovation and progress in Southern Africa. To mark the occasion, the Montgomery Group will once again award the Montgomery Bursary to a deserving culinary student, continuing a legacy of investment in future talent.
Hostex is a trade-only exhibition. Whether you are a seasoned restaurateur, a catering professional, or a culinary student, the SA Chefs Village is where the most important conversations of 2026 will happen. Professionals are encouraged to pre-register online to secure their free access to the floor.
