Mazda Unveils the Third-Generation CX-5 With Stylish Redesign, Enhanced Tech, and Fuel-Efficient Engines Ahead of 2026 SA Launch

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 boasts a complete redesign from the chassis upward. Built on an entirely new platform, the SUV has grown in every direction:
- Length: +115 mm (now 4,690 mm)
- Width: +15 mm (now 1,860 mm)
- Height: +20 mm (now 1,695 mm)
- Wheelbase: +115 mm (now 2,815 mm)
These dimensions don’t just offer better road presence—they also result in a roomier interior and 61 litres of extra boot space, bringing the total to 500 litres with the seats up.
Redesigned Exterior: Where Elegance Meets Sportiness
Mazda’s signature Kodo design language evolves in this CX-5, offering a refined and more sculpted appearance. The new model ditches the traditional Mazda badge on the boot, replacing it with bold MAZDA lettering—a modern touch seen in European brands like Opel.
At the front, “recessed” LED headlamps and an upward-curved bumper add aggression, while the rear draws inspiration from both the CX-60 and BMW’s X1, creating a dynamic look from every angle.
A Minimalist Interior with Maximum Impact
Mazda describes the interior as “human-centric and uncluttered.” It’s a radical shift from the previous generation, now sporting:
- A new freestanding infotainment system (12.9 or 15.6 inches)
- A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
- Fully touchscreen controls for climate and audio
- Ambient lighting (a first for the CX-5)
- Premium materials across the dash and panels
While the rotary dial is gone, Mazda has retained the traditional gear lever and a one-piece centre console, ensuring familiarity within the innovation.

Powertrain Options: Petrol & Mild Hybrid – But No Diesel
Despite global trends, Mazda is not going fully hybrid just yet. Instead, buyers in South Africa can expect:
- A 2.5L SkyActiv-G petrol engine (non-turbo), delivering 132kW and 242Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive
- A 24-volt mild-hybrid version of the same engine with 104kW and 238Nm, expected in select markets with both FWD and AWD options
Unfortunately, the diesel-powered 2.2L SkyActiv-D is officially discontinued, making room for the upcoming SkyActiv-Z hybrid, which is currently in development and set to debut globally in 2027.
South African Launch Confirmed for Early 2026
Mazda South Africa has confirmed the new CX-5 is coming as part of four new model launches next year. Speaking to Moneyweb earlier this year, Mazda SA CEO Craig Roberts remarked:
“The new CX-5 will debut in the third quarter of this year and probably hit our shores in early 2026. It is the first product we are really, really excited about.”
While local pricing and specifications are yet to be revealed, excitement is building among Mazda loyalists and SUV shoppers alike.
