AmaZulu midfielder Bongani Zungu has made it clear that his international dream is far from over. He insists he still hopes to don the Bafana Bafana jersey again before the end of his playing career.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The 32-year-old, capped more than 30 times for South Africa, believes he can force his way back into coach Hugo Broos’ plans. This is despite being overlooked in recent years during his stints in Europe with Amiens and Rangers.
Eyeing Another Bafana Chance
With South Africa preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations in December and edging closer to FIFA World Cup qualification, Zungu says his motivation remains strong.
“I play football with the hope of representing my country,” Zungu said. “I’m at a club where I’m happy and enjoying my football, and as long as I work hard and stay fit, I can achieve anything.”
Broos has generally leaned towards younger options. However, his continued trust in Themba Zwane offers encouragement to Zungu, who still believes he can make a late return to the fold.
Senior Leadership Role at AmaZulu
Zungu is thriving in his role as one of the senior figures at AmaZulu, relishing the chance to guide the next generation.
“I’ve been a youngster before, and I could always see how the senior players would offer guidance to the younger generation, so I’ve learned from them,” he explained. “I have won a few trophies in my career, so that winning mentality is something I try to relay to the youngsters.”
Focus on Carling Knockout Cup
Usuthu will face Magesi in the Carling Knockout next weekend, and Zungu insists the team will bounce back strongly after their MTN8 disappointment.
“We want to compete for every cup available. The Carling Knockout is no different, and we’ll give it our all,” he said.
For Zungu, while club duties remain the immediate focus, the bigger picture is clear he refuses to close the chapter on his Bafana Bafana journey.
