As we navigate the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), AI is rapidly becoming a key driver of change across industries, reshaping the way we work, live, and interact with the world around us.

    To prepare individuals for the AI-driven future, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers a Short Learning Programme on Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR. This course is designed to introduce learners to the fundamental concepts of AI, explore its applications, and provide insight into its implications for society and the future of work.

    Course Overview

    The Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR Short Learning Programme is a free, public course designed to help individuals gain a foundational understanding of AI, its capabilities, and the societal and economic changes it is bringing about. The course aims to equip learners with the knowledge needed to navigate the AI-driven world and reflect on their role in shaping the future.

    • Instructor: CAT SLP team
    • Course Duration: 03 February 2025 – 08 December 2025
    • Enrollment Period: Opens 30 January 2025 and closes 31 October 2025
    • Admission Requirements:
      • Must be 18 years or older
      • Access to an internet-enabled device
      • Ability to communicate in English
      • No prior knowledge of AI or the subject content is required

    The course has been developed to introduce participants to the significance of AI in the 4IR, its real-world applications, and the potential impact on various industries and human labor. As AI technologies evolve, it is critical to understand both the opportunities and challenges that come with it.     This unit focuses on the foundational concepts of AI. It covers the basic techniques used in AI, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL). By understanding these building blocks, participants will gain the functional awareness needed to engage with AI.
