As thousands of matriculants across South Africa prepare to step into the next chapter of their lives, many are also thinking about buying their first car. With new car prices starting from around R178 799, pre-owned vehicles offer a far more practical and affordable entry point for young drivers.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

    Budget-Friendly and Reliable Options

When shopping for a first car, the price tag isn’t the only consideration. Buyers must factor in running costs such as insurance, fuel efficiency, servicing, repairs, and the availability of spare parts. A vehicle that’s light on fuel and easy to maintain can make a big difference in monthly expenses.

Two models that stand out in the used car market for their affordability, low running costs, and ease of ownership are the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Picanto. These compact hatchbacks are particularly well-suited for city driving thanks to their nimble size, light steering, and excellent fuel economy.

Why These Two Hatchbacks Make Sense

Both Hyundai and Kia have established strong dealer networks in South Africa, which means spare parts and servicing are widely available. This adds to their appeal as first cars for students and young professionals.

According to AutoTrader data covering the first eight months of the year:

    • The Hyundai Grand i10 sold for an average price of R149 217, with an average mileage of 28 189 km and an average age of four years.
    • The Kia Picanto averaged a lower price of R144 178, but came slightly older at six years and 35 329 km on the odometer.

These figures highlight good value for money and a healthy used car market for both models.

    Frugal and Easy to Drive

Under the hood, both cars offer 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines that are known for their reliability and efficiency. Buyers can choose between manual and automatic transmissions, making it easy to find a model that suits their driving preference.

The Hyundai Grand i10 can comfortably seat four adults and has a 360-litre boot, making it surprisingly practical for its size. The 1.0-litre engine uses just 5.5 litres of petrol per 100 km, keeping fuel bills low.

Meanwhile, the third-generation Kia Picanto with the 1.2-litre engine delivers even better efficiency at around 5.0 L/100 km, making it a top choice for those who plan to do a lot of city driving.

    Safety Considerations

While these hatchbacks offer great value, many older entry-level models lack modern safety features such as ABS brakes, airbags, or stability control. It’s wise to prioritise a model with essential safety equipment, even if it costs a bit more.

For those who want a step up in comfort and safety, alternatives like the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, Ford Figo, and Kia Rio offer more refinement, though at a slightly higher price point.

    A Smart Start

For young buyers entering the world of car ownership, the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Picanto strike a strong balance between affordability, practicality, and reliability. They’re economical to run, easy to park, and come from trusted brands with solid local support. With careful shopping and attention to safety features, these two small hatchbacks make excellent first cars for South Africa’s next generation of drivers.
