Call for NPTR Nominations: Here’s How To Join the National Public Transport Regulator

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy officially opened nominations for qualified and experienced professionals seeking appointment to the National Public Transport Regulator (NPTR). The call, made under section 13 (1A) of the National Land Transport Amendment Act, Act 23 of 2023, seeks individuals who can contribute to strengthening oversight and governance in the public transport sector.

The minister may appoint successful candidates on either a full-time or part-time basis for terms not exceeding five years.

Understanding the NPTR’s Role

The NPTR, established through the National Land Transport Act of 2009, plays a pivotal role in shaping the country’s transport framework. Its mandate includes monitoring and overseeing public transport services across the country, while also supporting the work of Provincial Regulatory Entities and municipalities.

Among its key responsibilities are:

  • Evaluating applications for operating licences for interprovincial and tourist transport services
  • Accrediting tourist transport operators
  • Regulating fares charged for public transport services nationwide
  • Advising the Minister on fare-related regulations and structures in line with section 8 of the Act

Who Should Apply

The Department of Transport is seeking nominees with strong expertise and background in specific fields. The department encourages individuals with training or experience in the following areas to apply:

  • Public Transport and Transport Economics
  • Accounting, Auditing, or Actuarial Studies
  • Law and Governance
  • Tourism Transport Management
  • Vehicle Standards and Specifications

Nomination Requirements

Interested individuals must submit a comprehensive application package that includes:

  • A signed nomination letter
  • A signed letter of acceptance by the nominee
  • A detailed CV outlining relevant expertise, board memberships, and professional background
  • Certified copies of identification documents and academic qualifications

Completed nominations must be directed to the Department of Transport’s Director-General, for the attention of Ms. Nomsa Mtshwene. Submissions can be made through the following channels:
