Electric Turbo Boosts Porsche 911 GTS Performance and Appeal

Until recently, enthusiasts widely considered the Porsche 911 GT3 Touring the sweet spot in the 911 lineup, balancing everyday comfort with pure performance. The arrival of the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS now challenges that perception, blending electrified performance with everyday usability.

Porsche has officially revealed the updated 992-generation 911 GTS, now available in Targa, Cabriolet, and Coupe formats. Buyers can choose either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive for both the Cabriolet and Coupe, giving them a broad range of options.

Electrified Powertrain

For the first time in the GTS badge’s history, the new model adopts Porsche’s T-Hybrid system. The previous 3.0-litre flat-six has been replaced with a 3.6-litre flat-six turbocharged engine paired with a 12-volt belt-starter generator and electric motor, powered by a 1.9-kWh battery pack.

This hybrid-assisted setup delivers 398 kW and 610 Nm, a healthy 45 kW/40 Nm increase over its predecessor. Power is sent through an eight-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission, enabling the GTS to rocket from 0–100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds with a top speed of 312 km/h.

The system cannot operate on electric power alone, but the battery’s positioning in the front ensures balanced weight distribution. The integrated electric motor also doubles as a starter and alternator, adding efficiency to the package.

The eTurbo Advantage

One of the standout innovations is Porsche’s new single electric turbocharger (eTurbo). Unlike the previous twin-turbo setup, this design uses an electric motor between the compressor and turbine, ensuring near-instant boost. The result is faster throttle response, sharper acceleration, and a more connected driving feel.

Chassis & Dynamics

Handling is sharpened by a suite of advanced technologies:

  • Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with adaptive dampers lowers ride height by 10 mm.
  • Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) with a 48-volt anti-roll system enhances stability.
  • Rear axle steering adds agility, especially in tight corners.

Aerodynamics also see a boost, with five active vertical flaps in the front bumper that adjust based on power demand, working alongside the rear spoiler to increase downforce.

Serious Stopping Power

The GTS rides on 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels with centre-lock hubs. Braking is handled by six-piston calipers on 408 mm discs upfront and four-piston calipers on 380 mm discs at the rear, ensuring confidence under hard braking.

The exterior gains refreshed styling with new Matrix LED headlights, while optional HD LED units offer illumination up to 600 metres. Inside, the GTS debuts Porsche’s 12.6-inch curved digital instrument cluster, which can replicate the brand’s classic five-dial layout. This pairs with the 10.9-inch infotainment screen for a thoroughly modern cockpit.

Other firsts for the GTS include push-button start, an air quality system, and wireless phone charging. Despite this modernisation, Porsche retains the traditional drive mode selector on the steering wheel.

Behind the Wheel

On the scenic mountain passes of the Cape Winelands, the new GTS proved both thrilling and versatile. The all-wheel-drive variant inspires supreme confidence, while the rear-wheel-drive model feels lighter and more direct, offering classic 911 balance.

The eTurbo’s immediacy combined with the hybrid system transforms the driving experience. Add in the unmistakable exhaust soundtrack, and the new GTS feels like a perfect middle ground between everyday usability and exhilarating performance.
