Family Planning Awareness Boosts Health Outcomes for Mothers and Babies
Ekurhuleni District Health Services recently hosted a health awareness campaign at Phola Park Clinic, highlighting the role of family planning in reducing maternal and child mortality. The event promoted safe fertility choices, early antenatal care, and the benefits of spacing childbirth.
Women learned about pregnancy health, psychological wellbeing, and managing medical conditions. Health professionals stressed the importance of booking antenatal visits before 20 weeks to detect complications early and save lives.
Access to Comprehensive Health Services
The campaign combined education with free health services, ensuring women left with practical support. Available services included:
- HIV Testing Services (HTS) and PrEP initiation
- Cervical and prostate cancer screenings
- Breast exams and mammograms with the Pink Drive
- Full access to contraceptive methods for informed family planning decisions
Community Voices
Local resident Nobuhle Mkheshane welcomed the initiative.
“There were many aspects of raising my baby I hadn’t considered. This campaign gave me guidance on being a better parent,” she said.
She also noted how healthcare workers helped her overcome cultural myths about pregnancy that can harm mothers and babies.
Youth-Friendly Resources
Professional Nurse Naso Thobejane encouraged young people to use the youth and adolescent-friendly services available at local clinics.
“Youth can visit their nearest clinic for advice. Health promoters and clinicians are always available to share information,” Thobejane explained.
