Load Reduction in Gauteng: Key Information for Residents

Eskom has announced that load reduction will continue across several areas in Gauteng from Monday, 14 July to Sunday, 20 July 2025. This targeted initiative is designed to protect the electricity distribution network by easing pressure on transformers and mini-substations, especially in high-demand and high-risk zones.

    What Is Load Reduction?

Load reduction is a controlled, localised power interruption implemented to protect critical electrical infrastructure. Unlike general load shedding, which affects large areas, load reduction focuses on specific zones where equipment is under strain due to issues like illegal connections, electricity theft, and increased consumption during colder months. The primary aim is to avoid long-lasting outages caused by equipment failure, which can take months to repair.

When Will Load Reduction Take Place?

Eskom’s load reduction schedule runs daily during peak demand periods:

    • Morning: 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM
    • Evening: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM

During these times, affected areas will experience planned power interruptions lasting several hours.

    Why Is Load Reduction Necessary?

Eskom continues to face numerous challenges, such as illegal electricity connections, meter tampering, and vandalism, which place excessive strain on transformers and mini-substations. The winter season, which brings higher electricity demand for heating, further compounds this issue. Load reduction is crucial for preventing catastrophic equipment failures, such as transformer explosions and fires, which pose significant safety risks and can lead to outages that last for months.

    What Can Residents Do?

Residents and businesses in the affected areas are advised to:

    • Prepare for scheduled power interruptions by charging devices and ensuring alternative lighting options are available.
    • Use electricity sparingly during peak hours to help reduce demand.
    • Report illegal connections or suspicious activity to Eskom or municipal authorities.
    • Stay informed by regularly checking Eskom’s official website and other reliable sources for updates or changes to the load reduction schedule.

Residents in these areas should prepare for power outages during the specified morning and evening windows.

    Eskom and Municipal Coordination

While Eskom manages load reduction in areas it directly supplies, some municipalities, such as City Power in Johannesburg, have temporarily suspended their load reduction programmes. However, Eskom’s Gauteng spokesperson, Amanda Qithi, confirmed that Eskom’s load reduction will continue as necessary to protect the grid and prevent further system instability.

    Stay Ready

Though load shedding has been suspended, residents in Gauteng should remain alert as Eskom implements load reduction to safeguard critical infrastructure during peak demand periods. By staying informed and preparing for scheduled outages, communities can minimise the impact of these disruptions and contribute to stabilising the electricity network.
