Why is it Called the GXX Number Plate?
The new Gauteng number plates adopt the format known as GXX (for example, GXX 123 GP) as part of a modernisation effort. The legacy plates prominently featured the “GP” suffix, inherited from Gauteng’s previous provincial coding system. The new system starts with “G” for Gauteng, followed by two additional letters (“XX”) that expand the numbering options significantly. This change not only reflects a fresh identity aligned with advanced security features but also addresses the shortage of unique number combinations previously constrained by the limited “GP” suffix.
