If you’re a learner in Gauteng planning to study at a South African university, writing the National Benchmark Test (NBT) might be one of the requirements for your admission. The NBT is used by many universities to assess whether you’re ready for university-level learning, especially in language, maths, and problem-solving. Booking your test can seem confusing at first, especially if you’re unfamiliar with online systems. That’s why we’ve put together this clear, step-by-step guide to help you understand exactly how to book your NBT test online from anywhere in Gauteng.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

How to Book an NBT Test in Gauteng Online

Whether you’re in Johannesburg, Pretoria, or surrounding areas, this guide will walk you through the process from start to finish — including registration, payment, and preparing for test day.

Step 1: Understand What the NBT Is

Before you book, it’s important to understand what the NBT is:

    • The NBT (National Benchmark Test) is used to assess a student’s academic readiness for university.
    • It consists of two tests:
      • AQL (Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy) – all students must write this.
      • MAT (Mathematics Test) – this is required for students applying to programmes that include Mathematics, such as Engineering, Science, Commerce, or Health Sciences.

Make sure to confirm with your chosen university which test(s) you must write.

Step 2: Gather the Required Information

Before you start booking online, make sure you have the following:

    • South African ID number or passport number (if you are a foreign student).
    • Valid email address – each student must have their own email address.
    • Mobile phone number for receiving SMS notifications.
    • Know which city and venue you want to write at. In Gauteng, this can be Johannesburg, Pretoria, or other locations depending on the available testing venues.
    • Information from your chosen university or college about what NBT tests they require.
    • Access to a computer or phone with internet connection.

Step 3: Visit the NBT Website

To book your NBT test, go to the official NBT website:

    • Open your internet browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Microsoft Edge).
    • In the address bar, type: www.nbt.ac.za
    • Press Enter.

Once the website has loaded, look for the option that says “Register to Write” or “How to book a test”.

Step 4: Create an Online Profile

You must register and create a profile on the NBT system. Follow these steps:

    1. Click on “Register to Write”.
    2. You will be taken to a registration form. Fill in the required details including:
      • Full name
      • ID or passport number
      • Date of birth
      • Gender
      • Home language
      • Race (optional)
      • Email address
      • Phone number

Make sure all information is accurate and belongs to the student writing the test.

Step 5: Choose Your Test Details

On the same registration page, you must select:

    • Test Type: AQL only, or AQL and MAT.
    • Preferred Test Date: Choose from the available dates. Some dates may already be full.
    • Preferred Test Venue: Choose a test venue close to where you live in Gauteng (e.g. Wits University, University of Pretoria, or other registered test centres).
    • University/Institution you are applying to: List all the universities you are applying to.

Be careful when selecting the test date and venue. Once you choose and submit, you cannot change this unless you re-register and pay again.

Also check: NBT Test Dates and Sites for 2025 Intake

Step 6: Submit Registration and Receive Reference Details

After you complete the form and submit it:

    • You will receive a username and a Unique EasyPay reference number.
    • Write these down and keep them safe. You will need this information to pay for the test, access your results, or change your details.

You will also receive a confirmation email with your booking information.

Step 7: Pay for Your Test

The NBT test is not free. You must pay through EasyPay.

    • Go to any EasyPay outlet such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or some pharmacies.
    • Tell the cashier you want to make an EasyPay payment for the NBT.
    • Give them your EasyPay reference number.
    • Pay the required amount. The price may vary depending on whether you are writing only AQL or both AQL and MAT.

Keep the payment receipt. It serves as proof that you have paid.

You can also pay using online banking if your bank supports EasyPay payments. Just make sure to use the correct EasyPay reference number.

    Step 8: Wait for Confirmation

Two to three days before your test date, you will receive an SMS and email from the NBT office.

    This will confirm:

    • The test venue address
    • Test starting time
    • What to bring
    • Any final instructions

Step 9: On the Test Day

Be prepared and arrive early at the test venue. Bring the following with you:

    • Your original South African ID or passport
    • Two HB pencils, a sharpener, and an eraser
    • Your EasyPay payment receipt
    • A small snack and bottle of water (there may be no food sold at the venue)
    • Your own face mask, if health protocols are in place

You are not allowed to use a calculator for any part of the test.

    Step 10: Receive Your Results

NBT results are usually released about 4 weeks after you write the test.

    • Visit the NBT website again.
    • Log in using your username or ID number.
    • Click on the option to view your results.

The NBT system will also send your results directly to the universities you selected during registration. You don’t need to email them yourself.

    Special Considerations

If you have a disability or medical condition (for example, if you need extra time or a scribe), contact the NBT helpdesk at least three weeks before your test. They can make special arrangements.

    Common Questions and Answers

Q: Can I change my test date after registering?
A: No. You must cancel and register again. You will also need to pay again.

Q: What happens if I miss my test?
A: You will have to re-register and pay again. There are no refunds for missed tests.

Q: How long are my results valid for?
A: Your NBT results are valid for three years.

Q: Can I write the test more than once?
A: Yes, but universities usually consider your first attempt. Check with your university before writing a second time.

    NBT Contact Information

If you need help, contact the NBT Helpdesk:

    • Phone: 021 650 3523 (office hours only)
    • Email: [email protected]

Booking your NBT test online is a straightforward process when you know what to expect. By following the steps outlined in this guide — from understanding which tests you need, registering online, paying through EasyPay, and preparing for the test day — you can avoid common mistakes and focus on doing your best. Writing the NBT is an important part of your university journey, and being well-prepared starts with booking it correctly.
