How to Save Up to R10 Per Litre on Petrol

With fuel prices sitting at record highs in South Africa, many motorists are looking for ways to ease the burden on their wallets. Fortunately, several of the country’s biggest banks offer cashback and loyalty rewards that can dramatically cut the effective cost of fuel in some cases, by nearly half.

Standard Bank Leads with R10 Per Litre Back

Standard Bank currently offers the highest fuel rewards in the country through its UCount Rewards programme. Customers on Tier 5 who pay with their credit cards at Astron Energy or Caltex stations can earn back as much as R10 per litre.

That’s a massive 46% off the inland price of 95 unleaded petrol, which sits at R21.55 per litre. In effect, motorists could pay as little as R11.55 per litre.

Even those on the lowest UCount tier still benefit, earning R0.60 per litre back, which adds up to around R27 in rewards on a small hatchback’s fuel tank. Debit and cheque card users earn less, between R0.10 and R1 per litre.

FNB’s Strong Offering at Engen

FNB comes in second with its eBucks rewards, particularly for Premier and Private clients. Drivers filling up at Engen stations can earn up to R8 per litre in eBucks at Level 5.

This works out to a functional petrol price of R13.55 per litre when rewards are redeemed. Customers with additional FNB products get extra perks:

  • +R2 per litre for vehicles financed by WesBank.
  • +R2 per litre for vehicles insured with FNB Insurance.

FNB Aspire customers also receive R0.60 per litre, with possible boosts of R0.30 each for WesBank and FNB Insurance.

Absa Pays in Cash

Absa’s reward programme is attractive because it pays cashback directly instead of points. At Sasol stations, top-tier customers can earn 30% of their spend back.

That’s equal to about R6.47 per litre, bringing the effective price to R15.08 per litre. Lower tiers, however, see much smaller returns, from 0.2% to 6.25%.

Discovery Bank and Vitality Miles

Discovery Bank, in partnership with BP and Shell, offers up to 20% back in Discovery Miles for customers who are also Vitality members. Discovery Insure clients can earn more if they drive responsibly, though the total rewards are capped at R1,500 per month. At the highest rate, petrol can cost as little as R17.24 per litre.

Smaller Rewards from Nedbank and Capitec

Nedbank’s Greenbacks and Capitec’s Live Better rewards are more modest. Nedbank customers get R0.25 back per litre at BP, while Capitec gives R0.20 back per litre at Shell. These don’t come close to the savings offered by Standard Bank, FNB, or Absa.
