In recent years, the concept of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) has revolutionised the way South Africans manage their shopping expenses. One of the most popular services in this space is Payflex, a local BNPL provider offering flexible payment options for online and in-store purchases. Whether you’re buying the latest gadgets, fashion items, or essential goods, Payflex allows you to spread your payments over a few weeks, interest-free.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

But how exactly do you use Payflex? If you’re new to the service or just looking for a guide on how to get started, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use Payflex effectively.

    What is Payflex?

Before diving into how Payflex works, it’s essential to understand the basics of this service. Payflex is a South African BNPL provider that lets you shop online or in-store and pay for your purchases in instalments. Instead of paying the full price upfront, you can pay 25% of the amount immediately, with the remaining balance paid off in equal instalments over six weeks. This makes it easier to manage your finances while still enjoying the convenience of immediate purchases.

    Why Choose Payflex?

Payflex is a preferred option for many South Africans because:

    • No interest: You only pay the price of the item, with no hidden fees or interest charges.
    • Flexible payments: You can split your payment into manageable instalments over 6 weeks.
    • Easy integration: Payflex works with a wide range of local retailers, both online and in-store.

Step 1: Download the Payflex App

The first step is to download their app. It’s available for free on both Android and iOS devices.

    • For Android users: Head over to the Google Play Store.
    • For iOS users: Visit the Apple App Store.

Once the app is installed, open it to begin the sign-up process.

Step 2: Create Your Payflex Account

To use Payflex, you’ll need to set up an account. This is a quick and simple process. Here’s what to do:

    1. Open the app and tap on “Create My Account”.
    2. Enter your personal details, including your South African ID number and contact information.
    3. Verify your identity by entering the one-time password (OTP) sent to your phone or email.
    4. Set up a secure password for future logins.

    Step 3: Browse Participating Stores

Payflex partners with a wide range of online and physical stores, allowing you to shop for everything from electronics to beauty products. You can easily find participating stores by browsing through the Payflex store directory. Once you’ve found a store you’d like to shop from, add your desired items to the cart.

Step 4: Choose Payflex at Checkout

Now that you have your items, it’s time to choose Payflex as your payment method.

    1. At checkout, select Payflex as your payment option.
    2. Log in to your Payflex account when prompted.
    3. Choose your preferred payment plan:
      • Pay in 3: Pay in three equal instalments, with the first payment due immediately.
      • Traditional Payflex: Spread your payments over six weeks, making equal payments every two weeks.

There is also payment flexibility for some merchants. If you’re uncertain about which plan to choose, refer to the terms provided at checkout.

    Step 5: Complete Your Purchase

Once you’ve selected your payment plan, you’ll be asked to pay the first 25% of the total cost upfront. The remaining 75% will be automatically deducted in equal instalments over the chosen period.

    • For example, if your total purchase is R1,200, you’ll pay R300 at checkout, and the remaining R900 will be divided into three equal payments of R300 each.

The beauty of it is that you can receive your items immediately, even before completing the full payment. This way, you don’t have to wait for weeks to enjoy your purchase.

    Step 6: Manage Your Payments

After completing your purchase, you can easily manage your payments using the Payflex app. The app provides a range of useful features, such as:

    • Viewing your payment schedule.
    • Making extra payments or paying early to reduce your balance.
    • Setting up payment reminders to avoid missing any instalments.
    • Tracking your spending and budgeting your payments.

You can access these features directly within the app, giving you full control over your purchases and payments.

    In-Store Shopping with Payflex

If you prefer shopping in person, it’s possible. Many South African retailers now support Payflex for in-store purchases. Here’s how it works:

    1. Visit a participating store and select your items.
    2. At checkout, open the Payflex app on your phone and scan the QR code provided by the cashier.
    3. Choose your payment plan and confirm the purchase.

It’s that simple! You can pay using Payflex in-store as easily as you would online.

    Benefits of Using Payflex

There are several advantages, especially for those who want to manage their finances more effectively. Some of the benefits include:

    • Interest-free instalments: Spread the cost of your purchases over time without paying extra.
    • No credit checks: Payflex doesn’t require a credit check, making it accessible to a wider range of consumers.
    • Easy tracking: The Payflex app allows you to track your payments and spending with ease.
