Gauteng households and businesses will once again need to adjust their routines this week as load reduction continues across several communities in the province. While many residents have become used to scheduled electricity cuts, the impact remains deeply felt. Outages influence school morning routines, disrupt remote and shift work, reduce operating hours for small businesses, and can heighten safety risks in the evenings.

Why Load Reduction Is Happening
Load reduction differs from national loadshedding. It targets localised areas where the electricity network is overloaded or at risk of damage. In many communities, ageing infrastructure, high consumption levels, and illegal connections place severe pressure on transformers and distribution points.
If a transformer burns out, the resulting outage can last weeks, not hours. City Power has stressed that these scheduled reductions are intended to protect equipment while upgrades and repairs continue. However, the frequent interruptions mean that communities must continue planning.
This week’s rotation runs from Monday, 10 November to Sunday, 16 November 2025, with outages taking place from 05h00 to 09h00 and again from 17h00 to 22h00.

How Residents Can Prepare
• Charge phones, routers, and laptops before outage windows.
• Prepare meals earlier in the day or use gas alternatives.
• Keep rechargeable or solar lights ready for evening use.
• Ensure security gates and garage doors can operate manually.
• Households relying on medical equipment should seek backup support in advance.
Working Toward Stability
Although load reduction remains disruptive, communities across Gauteng continue to adapt and support one another. Neighbourhood WhatsApp groups frequently share schedules and alerts. Residents also report illegal connections that place additional strain on local substations.
City Power has indicated that infrastructure upgrades are ongoing. However, reducing pressure on the network requires cooperation between the utility and communities. When residents stay informed and prepared, daily life becomes easier to manage, and safety is better protected.
Prepared communities are empowered communities.
