Alleged Motive

Sources close to the family revealed the hostage situation was fueled by a personal family dispute involving the paternity of a child. Tips for Civilians in a Hostage Situation

  1. Stay Calm and Comply
Remain calm and cooperate with captors. Avoid sudden movements, arguments, or actions that may provoke them. Following instructions reduces risk.
  2. Avoid Drawing Attention
Keep a low profile. Don’t stare aggressively or make hostile gestures. Avoid speaking unless necessary and speak in a calm, normal tone.
  3. Observe and Remember Details
Try to remember details about captors, such as physical traits, voices, clothing, or any distinguishing features. This information is important for rescuers.
  4. Establish Rapport
If possible, develop a basic human connection with captors. Showing respect can make captors less likely to harm you.
  5. Stay Alert and Patient
Time often works in your favour. Be patient during the ordeal and wait for the right opportunity to escape if it safely arises.
  6. Avoid Escape Attempts Unless Safe
Do not try to escape unless you are confident of survival. Hostage takers may react violently to escape attempts.
  7. Follow Rescuer Instructions During Rescue
If a rescue team arrives, do not run or make sudden movements. Drop to the ground, keep your hands visible, and obey all instructions.
  8. Notify Authorities If You Witness a Hostage Situation
Move to a safe place and call the police immediately. Provide as much information as possible, such as location, number of captors, weapons, and hostages.

Community Safety

Police continue their investigation into the event to establish all circumstances surrounding the hostage situation. The focus remains on providing support to the affected family members and reinforcing community safety protocols in Mamelodi.
