What Happened in Roodepoort?
The officers: Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa (51) and Sergeant Simon Masenye (45), were escorting prisoner Jabulani Moyo to and from court. The attack occurred during their return trip to prison. Moyo, armed with a stolen SAPS firearm, attacked and fatally shot the officers. Subsequently, Moyo fled the scene, prompting police to launch a nationwide search to apprehend him.
Who Were the Officers?
- Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa had 23 years of service with SAPS. He was part of the Johannesburg Special Task Team, focusing on serious crimes such as robberies.
- Sergeant Simon Masenye was also a dedicated officer who served alongside his colleagues in challenging conditions.
Both men left behind grieving families and colleagues who remember them as committed public servants.
The Murder of Police Officers: The Manhunt and Investigation
The SAPS has deployed integrated teams involving the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Crime Intelligence, and district detectives to find Moyo. They warn the public that Moyo is dangerous and should not be approached. They have offered a cash reward of R150,000 for information leading to his arrest.
During the incident, the suspect reportedly took control of an unmarked police vehicle. It was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene.
Official Condolences and Calls for Justice
Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia visited the families of the fallen officers to extend condolences. He promised that justice will be served. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola condemned the fatal attack. He called it not only an assault on law enforcement but an attack on the state’s authority and the rule of law. He urged all officers to remain vigilant and use all lawful means to protect themselves.

The Minister also took the time to extend his sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni from Mpumalanga, who was killed on Saturday, while responding to a burglary incident in Schoemansdal near Komatipoort.

This tragic event forms part of a worrying pattern. Since the start of the financial year, 27 SAPS members have lost their lives in the line of duty. Six were killed in attacks similar to this one.
