Nabi Urges Calm as Kaizer Chiefs Fall to Sekhukhune in First League Loss

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has urged calm following Amakhosi’s 3-1 defeat to Sekhukhune United at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. The result marked Chiefs’ first Betway Premiership loss of the campaign after a strong start that saw them collect 13 points from their opening five matches.

Sekhukhune Take Advantage

Eric Tinkler’s Sekhukhune, who have emerged as surprise early-season leaders, punished Chiefs’ defensive lapses. Bradley Grobler opened the scoring early on before Flavio Da Silva equalised for the hosts. However, Grobler struck again in the second half, followed by Thabang Monare’s finish, sealing an impressive win for Babina Noko.

Nabi: ‘We Were Our Own Worst Enemy’

Reflecting on the match, Nabi admitted that his side contributed to their own downfall.

“We knew going into this game that it would be difficult against a tough opponent,” he said. “But we made too many mistakes that led directly to goals. Sekhukhune hurt us in transition and with long balls that we couldn’t deal with.”

The coach also noted that Chiefs struggled offensively despite creating chances.

“We were not good enough today, even going forward. We couldn’t control the game or put ourselves in front. Still, there’s no need to panic we must learn from this and show more conviction in the next match.”

Defensive Errors Costly

Nabi highlighted specific lapses that gifted Sekhukhune their goals.

“For the first goal, two players went for the same ball, leaving no cover. The second came from us losing possession in a dangerous area, and the third was a long ball flicked on by Grobler. We respect his quality, but these are errors we should have avoided,” he explained.

Focus Shifts to Continental Test

Despite the setback, Nabi stressed the importance of a quick response as Chiefs prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Angolan side Kabuscorp on Saturday.
“We told the players that accidents happen, but what we need to see now is a reaction. We have to lift our heads and be ready. This is a knockout tie over two legs, so our approach must be different,” Nabi concluded.
