Great Wall Motors (GWM) has officially unveiled the facelifted version of its Tank 500 SUV, marking the first significant update to the model since its debut in China four years ago. As one of the brand’s earliest models in its global line-up, the refreshed Tank 500 now features subtle exterior revisions and a heavily modernised interior, placing a strong focus on luxury and advanced technology.

Revealed over the weekend in China, the facelifted Tank 500 brings restrained exterior changes. Notable updates include a slightly redesigned grille and the removal of the Tank badge from the spare wheel cover. A fresh paint finish dubbed “Dunhuang Green” adds a new visual touch, catering to buyers looking for something distinct.
Advanced LiDAR Takes Centre Stage
One of the most significant technological additions is that it now features a roof-mounted LiDAR system, similar to the one seen on the Volvo EX90. Positioned at the centre of the roof, this sensor works in combination with a surround-view camera system to enhance safety and driver-assistance features. While GWM hasn’t released in-depth specifications, the inclusion of LiDAR marks a shift towards semi-autonomous driving capabilities.
Where the facelift makes its biggest impression is inside. Designers have cleaned up the previously busy centre console, reducing the number of physical buttons and switches. Two wireless charging pads (50W each), dual cupholders, and a relocated control setup now occupy the redesigned central area.
Gone is the chunky, aircraft-style gear shifter, replaced with a column-mounted selector for a sleeker appearance. While the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.6-inch infotainment screen are carried over, a new 17.3-inch 3K drop-down rear screen reminiscent of the one found in the BMW 7 Series adds an entertainment boost for backseat passengers.

Plug-in Hybrid Power Options
Under the bonnet, the facelifted Tank 500 continues to be powered by two plug-in hybrid systems in China, both based on GWM’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
- Hi4-T Version: Delivers 300kW and 750Nm using a 37.1kWh battery and a single electric motor. It maintains the nine-speed automatic transmission and claims a 110 km electric-only range (CLTC standard).
- Hi4-Z Version: Enhances performance with a second electric motor and a larger 59kWh battery, pushing total output to a staggering 654kW and 1,195Nm. This version uses a three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and achieves a 201 km EV range.
Global Engine Line-up
Outside of China, the Tank 500 is expected to retain its existing powertrains:
- 2.0-litre Hybrid (HEV) – 255kW/648Nm
- 3.0-litre Twin-Turbo V6 Petrol – 265kW/500Nm
- 2.4-litre Turbodiesel (Thailand only) – 135kW/480Nm
- Future 3.0-litre V6 Diesel – Expected to launch in 2027
Availability in South Africa
While the facelifted Tank 500 is set to go on sale in China next month, GWM has not yet confirmed if or when this updated version will reach South African shores. However, with growing local interest in luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs, more details regarding a possible local launch could surface later in 2025 or early 2026.
The updated GWM Tank 500 shows the brand’s commitment to merging robust SUV capability with premium features and cutting-edge tech. While exterior changes are modest, the dramatic interior overhaul and advanced hybrid options point to GWM’s aim of making the Tank 500 a serious contender in the luxury off-roader space.
