Lucas Ribeiro Pens Down Heartfelt Message to Mamelodi Sundowns Fans

Mamelodi Sundowns have been dealt a major blow with the confirmed departure of Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who has officially parted ways with the club after months of speculation about his future.
A Sudden End to a Glittering Spell
Ribeiro had not featured for the Brazilians this season, having already pushed for a move away and reportedly attracted interest from Qatar SC and Brazilian giants Fluminense. His last competitive outing came during the FIFA Club World Cup in June, before contractual disputes led him to approach FIFA’s Tribunal in an effort to cut ties with the Tshwane giants.
On Monday, the 26-year-old ended the uncertainty by confirming on social media that he has left the Betway Premiership champions. In a heartfelt statement, Ribeiro reflected on his two memorable years at Chloorkop.
“From the very first day I arrived, I gave my all, on and off the field, to earn my place and proudly defend Mamelodi Sundowns,” his statement read. “These past two years have been incredible, full of emotions. I have learned so much from this beautiful culture, not only to become a better player but also a better human being.”
Gratitude to Fans and Teammates
The Brazilian forward reserved special thanks for the supporters, affectionately known as Masandawana, who embraced him from the start.
“To my wonderful Masandawana supporters, thank you for everything. Your support and love meant so much to me, and I will never forget you. I will always carry in my heart the memories of the emotions I lived, the goals, the assists, the trophies, and the magical nights that made me feel at home,” Ribeiro said.
He also paid tribute to his teammates and technical staff, describing them as his “second family” and crediting them for contributing to his success. “To my teammates, thank you for every battle, every title won, every smile and every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers, and I will miss you so much,” he added.

Stats That Speak Volumes
During his stay at Sundowns, Ribeiro cemented himself as one of the most impactful foreign players to grace the Premier Soccer League. Across 88 appearances, he netted 37 goals and delivered 23 assists. His form in the 2023/24 season saw him crowned Footballer of the Season and Player’s Player of the Season, underlining his importance to Sundowns’ dominance both domestically and continentally.
From his sharp finishing to his vision in the final third, Ribeiro was instrumental in guiding Sundowns through title-winning campaigns and memorable CAF Champions League clashes. His exit leaves a significant void in coach Rulani Mokwena’s attacking arsenal.

Unresolved Matters Linger
Despite Ribeiro’s farewell, Sundowns are yet to formally confirm his departure, fuelling speculation about lingering contractual disputes. Reports suggest the club may escalate the matter further, potentially involving FIFA, given the Brazilian’s decision to push for a termination.
While his Instagram statement indicates his focus is now on the next chapter, uncertainty surrounds where Ribeiro will continue his career. Qatar remains the most likely destination, though links to European and South American sides remain in play.
A Beloved Star Leaves a Legacy
Ribeiro’s time in yellow may have ended on a sour note behind the scenes, but his on-field legacy remains undeniable. His flair, humility, and unwavering connection with the fans made him a favourite at Loftus Versfeld, earning the respect of teammates and rivals alike.
“I wish I could have said goodbye in a better way,” Ribeiro concluded, “but please know that my love for you is endless. Thank you, South Africa, and thank you, Mamelodi Sundowns, for everything, with much love.”
For the Masandawana faithful, Ribeiro’s farewell marks the end of an unforgettable era and the beginning of an anxious wait to see how the club will fill the void left by one of its brightest stars.
