South Africa’s Border Control Gets a Security Overhaul

Beginning August 1, 2025, the South African Border Management Authority (BMA) introduced new immigration entry and exit stamps at all ports of entry. These include airports, seaports, and land border posts, marking a nationwide upgrade. The new stamps replace older versions that were vulnerable to misuse and forgery. Border Management Authority CEO Dr Mike Masiapato said, “On Friday, 1 August 2025, BMA introduced new security stamps replaced the old vulnerable stamps which has been used by the immigration specialists.” 

“In the past few months, we observed widespread misuse of these stamps with individuals illegally stamping people passports with fraudulently reproduced stamps.” 

“This initiative forms part of the BMA’s broader commitment to strengthening national security and represents a deliberate step towards enhancing the integrity of border control processes.” 

“In this regard, we collaborated with Government Printing Works and designed the new stamps with the highest security standards including the BMA logo to prevent tampering, forgery and unauthorised use of those particular stamps.”
