Here’s your go-to guide to the best game reserves and parks near Jozi, perfect for your next road trip.

Pilanesberg National Park – A crater full of creatures (Approx. 2 hours)

    Distance from Johannesburg: 170 km
Best for: Big Five viewing, self-drives, family-friendly escapes

Nestled inside an extinct volcanic crater, Pilanesberg is one of the most accessible Big Five destinations near Johannesburg. The landscape here is as dramatic as the wildlife – think rolling hills, waterholes, and sweeping savannahs where elephants roam freely and lions stalk prey at dusk.

This park is ideal for day trips or weekends, especially for families and first-time safari-goers. You’ll find well-marked roads, picnic spots, and plenty of accommodation options ranging from rustic chalets to luxury lodges. Being malaria-free makes it even more appealing.

    Kruger National Park

Dinokeng Game Reserve – The closest Big Five experience (Approx. 1.5 hours)

    Distance from Johannesburg: 110 km
Best for: Short getaways, affordable safaris, first-timers

Dinokeng might be one of Gauteng’s best-kept secrets. It’s the only Big Five reserve in the province, making it the quickest way to go wild without venturing too far from the city.

You can choose between guided game drives or self-drive routes, with chances to see lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant. There’s also a good mix of lodges, cottages and glamping options, so whether you’re after comfort or adventure, Dinokeng delivers.

    Tripadvisor

Madikwe Game Reserve – Luxury meets wilderness (Approx. 4 hours)

    Distance from Johannesburg: 360 km
Best for: Luxury safaris, couples, serious wildlife lovers

Madikwe is where luxury meets conservation. Tucked up near the Botswana border, it’s home to thriving populations of elephants, black rhinos, and even endangered African wild dogs.

Most lodges here offer all-inclusive experiences, which means gourmet meals, twice-daily game drives and sundowners by the fire come standard. It’s perfect for couples or special occasions. Bonus? No malaria risk here either.

    Madikwe Game Reserve

Welgevonden Game Reserve – Remote, wild and exclusive (Approx. 2.5 hours)

    Distance from Johannesburg: 250 km
Best for: Private lodges, off-the-beaten-track safaris, bird lovers

If you’re after a more exclusive, less-crowded safari experience, Welgevonden in the Waterberg region ticks all the boxes. You won’t find self-drive options here – all game drives are guided by experts, which makes for better sightings and a more immersive bush experience.

With limited lodges and no public access, Welgevonden feels remote and untouched, yet it’s close enough for a weekend getaway. Expect Big Five sightings, unique terrain, and the kind of stillness city life can’t offer.

    Booking.com

Marakele National Park – Rugged landscapes and soaring views (Approx. 4 hours)

    Distance from Johannesburg: 260 km
Best for: Scenic drives, mountain views, birdwatching

Marakele offers something different – a combination of bushveld game viewing and mountainous terrain. Located in the heart of the Waterberg, the park is a sanctuary for both the Big Five and birdlife, with over 400 species recorded.

A 4×4 track takes you to the top of Lenong Hill, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and the chance to see Cape vultures circling overhead. Accommodation ranges from eco-friendly tented camps to basic rest camps. It’s quiet, wild and well worth the trip.

    Jen From Africa

You don’t need to fly across the country to experience the magic of a South African safari. These top safari destinations near Johannesburg prove that incredible wildlife, serene landscapes and unforgettable adventures are all just a drive away. Whether you’re craving close encounters with elephants, chasing sunsets with lions in the background, or simply need a digital detox in the bush – Gauteng and its surrounds offer it all.
