Sibisi and Maswanganyi Return as Orlando Pirates Target MTN8 Glory

Orlando Pirates have been handed a major boost ahead of the highly anticipated MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC, with Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi cleared to play. The talented midfielder’s availability is a significant lift for the Buccaneers, who are aiming to claim a record fourth consecutive MTN8 title this Saturday at Mbombela Stadium.

Maswanganyi, one of Pirates’ most influential playmakers, was injured during their Betway Premiership clash with Chippa United and missed Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria. The international break, however, allowed him the necessary time to recover fully.

“If you see him on the pitch, it means the medical department has cleared him to be there,” said head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou after Wednesday’s training session. “I feel sad whenever my players are injured, so I’m glad he is with us again.”

Defensive Reinforcements Return

In addition to Maswanganyi’s comeback, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi has also rejoined full training and is expected to feature on Saturday. Thabiso Sesane and Makhehlene Makhaula have recovered as well, though they remain unlikely to play a major role in the final.

Despite having eight players away on international duty during preparations, Ouaddou remains confident his team is ready. “This is part of the responsibilities that come with being a big club. We must manage this situation effectively,” he explained. “The majority of the work has been done. Teaching them the principles and ensuring their fitness is the most important part.”

Pirates Chasing Historic Fourth Title

This year’s MTN8 final is a rematch of last season’s showdown, where Pirates defeated Stellenbosch to lift the trophy. The Soweto giants have dominated the competition in recent years, winning the title in 2022, 2023, and 2024. A victory this weekend would see them become the first club ever to win the MTN8 four seasons in a row.

It will also be their fifth appearance in the final in six years, underlining their consistency at the top level. Since 2008, Pirates have contested eight MTN8 finals, lifting the trophy on six occasions — a remarkable 75% win rate.

Mbombela Stadium Ready for Showpiece

Mbombela Stadium, which sold out within days of tickets going on sale, is set to host yet another thrilling encounter. Stadium manager Roelf Kotze has assured fans that the playing surface will be in pristine condition.

“The most important thing about this event is the pitch. Once you get everybody in the stadium, the first thing they normally do is look at the pitch. I can assure you, the pitch is in great condition. It will showcase the stadium,” said Kotze.

Saturday’s clash is shaping up to be a classic. Pirates will look to their big-game players, including Maswanganyi and Sibisi, to inspire them to glory, while Stellenbosch will be eager to upset the champions and lift their first major trophy.

With a sold-out crowd, two in-form teams, and a trophy on the line, all eyes will be on Mbombela Stadium when the referee blows the whistle. Pirates fans will be hoping the return of key stars proves decisive as they chase history and another piece of silverware.
