As African Bank celebrates its 50th anniversary, the institution has reaffirmed its dedication to the Soweto Marathon. This is despite the ongoing dispute between the Soweto Marathon Trust (SMT) and the Non-Profit Company (NPC) over hosting rights. Chief Marketing Officer Sbusiso Khumalo assured athletes and supporters that all financial obligations, including prize money and race logistics, are fully secured.
“The disagreements between the two parties don’t involve us,” Khumalo explained. “Our focus is to ensure the marathon takes place and that winners receive their prize money. We’re in the second year of a three-year sponsorship contract and plan to renew it when it ends next year.”
Ensuring a Smooth 2025 Soweto Marathon Experience
Khumalo emphasised that African Bank’s sponsorship extends beyond financial rewards. The bank contributes to vital race elements such as T-shirts, service providers, and water points. He confirmed that the prize fund remains unchanged at R250,000 per winner, highlighting the bank’s commitment to delivering a seamless event.
“Last year, we sponsored three watering points, and this year we’re increasing that number. Our goal is to ensure runners and spectators alike enjoy a memorable event,” he said.
Commitment Amid Challenges
Despite administrative uncertainty surrounding the marathon’s organising bodies, Khumalo stressed that African Bank’s involvement is purely about community upliftment and celebrating the runners who embody the event’s spirit.
“We didn’t step in because of any crisis,” he stated. “We’re here to give back to our customers and to support the people of Soweto. Our role isn’t political — it’s about making the race possible financially and ensuring its legacy continues.”
Looking towards the future, Khumalo shared his ambition to grow the Soweto Marathon’s prestige by increasing its prize money significantly.
“My dream is to see this race offer R1 million in prize money one day. We’re working closely with organisers to make that a reality, but it has to be done responsibly,” he added.
Running Towards a Brighter Future
The Soweto Marathon—often dubbed the “People’s Race”—continues to hold a special place in the hearts of athletes and residents alike. With African Bank reaffirming its sponsorship and ensuring financial stability, this year’s edition promises to uphold the rich tradition of resilience, unity, and pride that the event represents.
As the countdown to 29 November begins, the message is clear: the race is on, the funding is secured, and Soweto’s streets are ready to echo once again with the sound of running feet and community spirit.
