Once again, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo stands tall as the undisputed leader of the hatchback pack. Produced locally, the Vivo sold an impressive 2,470 units in September, making it not only the top-selling hatchback but also the second most popular vehicle overall, just behind the Toyota Hilux. With a starting price of R271,900, the Vivo continues to win over buyers with its blend of reliability, affordability, and local pride.

Suzuki Swift Takes a Close Second
The Suzuki Swift maintained its strong position in the market with 2,265 units sold, securing second place. Known for its fuel efficiency, stylish looks, and low running costs, the Swift has become a household name among budget-conscious South Africans. Starting at R224,900, it’s a favourite among first-time buyers and young professionals alike.

Toyota Starlet and Hyundai Grand i10 Hold Steady
In third place sits the Toyota Starlet, which racked up 1,629 sales. With a starting price of R268,300, the Starlet continues to impress with its smooth ride, spacious cabin, and Toyota’s trusted after-sales service.
The Hyundai Grand i10 followed closely in fourth, moving 1,470 units. While Hyundai doesn’t separate hatchback and sedan figures, the model’s popularity is undeniable. Starting from R224,900, it remains one of the country’s most practical small cars.

Toyota Vitz Completes the Top Five
Rounding off the top five is Toyota’s entry-level Vitz, which achieved 1,446 sales in September. With a price tag from R178,800, it’s among the most affordable new cars on the market, appealing strongly to students and budget-driven motorists.

VW Polo and Renault Kwid Still in Demand
The Vivo’s bigger sibling, the VW Polo, secured sixth place with 789 units sold. Despite a higher entry price of R373,800, it remains a desirable option for those wanting premium features in a compact body.
In seventh place, the Renault Kwid found 669 buyers, thanks to its SUV-inspired styling and starting price of just R178,799, making it a solid choice for cost-conscious drivers.
Suzuki and Hyundai Round Out the List
Eighth place went to the Suzuki Baleno, recording 478 sales at a starting price of R247,900. The Baleno’s generous features and roomy interior make it one of the most value-packed options in its class.
The Suzuki S-Presso followed with 305 units sold, offering quirky styling and compact practicality from R178,900. Finally, the Hyundai i20 completed the top ten, sending 269 cars to new homes at prices starting from R309,900.
