Victor Osimhen Slammed for ‘Faking Injury’ Before Bafana Clash

Nigerian superstar Victor Osimhen has come under scrutiny. This is after missing the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana, with claims that his injury is fake.
The 26-year-old forward was forced off during Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda last weekend, reportedly suffering a bruised shin. Although he initially tried to play on, he was eventually substituted and later ruled out of the clash against South Africa in Bloemfontein. The Nigerian medical team allowed him to leave the camp to undergo further assessment with his new club, Galatasaray.
Gyan Questions Severity of Injury
Former Ghanaian captain and record goalscorer Asamoah Gyan has questioned whether Osimhen’s injury was genuine. Speaking to Turkish outlet Habersarikirmizi, Gyan suggested the striker’s absence was a tactical move. He said the move was designed to protect him ahead of Galatasaray’s upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.
“I know these tricks,” Gyan said. “Someone probably told Osimhen, ‘Look, we spent a lot of money on you. The Champions League is coming up. Play a bit for your country, get injured, and the next day you’ll be back in Türkiye.’”
Gyan’s comments have sparked debate across social media. Some fans are accusing the striker of putting club commitments ahead of national duty.
Record-Breaking Transfer Adds Pressure
Osimhen’s situation has been under intense media spotlight since his record €75 million (R1.5 billion) move to Turkish champions Galatasaray earlier this year. This was the most expensive signing in Super Lig history. Reports indicate that Galatasaray’s medical team diagnosed him with a moderate ankle ligament sprain and have already started treatment.
While this confirms he has a legitimate injury, Gyan’s remarks have added fuel to speculation that Galatasaray might have pressured the player to prioritise his club over Nigeria’s World Cup campaign.

Super Eagles Miss Their Star Man
Without Osimhen leading the line, the Super Eagles struggled in front of goal and were held to a 1-1 draw by Bafana Bafana at Toyota Stadium. The result leaves Nigeria’s qualification hopes in a precarious position, with every remaining fixture now crucial.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) also criticised stand-in striker Cyriel Dessers for failing to make an impact against South Africa, saying his lack of pace and finishing hurt the team’s attacking threat.

Club vs Country Debate Rages On
Osimhen’s absence has reignited the long-standing club vs country debate, particularly with European teams often reluctant to release their African stars for international duty. Fans and pundits remain divided; some believe Osimhen had every right to return to his club for treatment, while others see Gyan’s claims as proof that player loyalty is shifting.
As the Super Eagles look to rescue their World Cup qualifying campaign, all eyes will be on whether Osimhen returns for Nigeria’s next round of fixtures. His availability could determine whether the three-time African champions make it to the 2026 showpiece.
