Weather Alert: Clear Skies and Warm Temperatures Expected Across South Africa on Wednesday

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued its latest forecast for Wednesday, 17 September 2025. Most provinces can expect fine, warm weather, but coastal communities face a serious warning for dangerous sea conditions stretching from the Western Cape to KwaZulu-Natal.

Impact-Based Warnings

SAWS has placed a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves between Cape Point in the Western Cape and Kosi Bay in KwaZulu-Natal. During the morning, the system will gradually move away from Cape Point to Plettenberg Bay.

Forecasters warn that the sea will be extremely rough, especially for small vessels. Strong swells could cause boats to take on water or even capsize near harbours and in-shore channels. Coastal residents and skippers are urged to avoid unnecessary sea trips and keep a close eye on updates.

Meteorologists note that spring often brings shifting wind patterns that trigger unusual swells. This latest alert forms part of SAWS’s ongoing push to raise awareness about coastal hazards during this time of year.

Provincial Weather Forecast

Here’s what South Africans can expect across the provinces on Wednesday, 17 September 2025:

Gauteng

Gauteng residents can look forward to a fine, warm day with clear skies. Conditions will be perfect for outdoor activities, but the UVB sunburn index sits at “very high”, making protection essential. Hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water are strongly recommended, particularly for people working outdoors or spending long hours in the sun.

Mpumalanga

Eastern Mpumalanga will start off cloudy with patches of drizzle and morning fog along the escarpment. Conditions will improve from the west as the day progresses, becoming partly cloudy and later fine. Expect cool weather in the high-lying areas and warmer conditions in the Lowveld.

Limpopo

The province will experience mostly warm and fine conditions, although the south-east will see cloudy skies early on. In the Western Bushveld, temperatures are expected to rise, with some areas becoming locally hot. With heat combining with dry air, residents are urged to stay hydrated and limit unnecessary midday exposure.

North West

North West will enjoy a pleasant day of fine and warm weather throughout. Clear skies and stable conditions will favour farming, travel, and everyday outdoor activities.

Free State

The Free State will start off crisp and cool, particularly in the central and southern towns. As the day develops, the province will warm up under fine skies, creating a comfortable balance between cool mornings and warmer afternoons.

Northern Cape

Parts of the Northern Cape will see morning fog in the western and south-western regions, lifting by mid-morning. Afterward, the province will settle into fine, cool-to-warm conditions with clear skies inland, making it an enjoyable day overall.

Western Cape

The Western Cape faces cloudy conditions over the southern and south-western parts, while inland towns can expect partly cloudy to fine skies. Temperatures will remain cold to cool, with coastal areas in particular waking up to chilly mornings.

Eastern Cape (western half)

The western half of the Eastern Cape will start the day partly cloudy and cool, before turning fine in the north during the afternoon. This improvement will benefit inland farming areas, which should see some sunshine later in the day.

Eastern Cape (eastern half)

Fog patches will appear in the north-east during the morning, followed by cloudy to partly cloudy skies. Conditions in the northern interior will clear to fine by the afternoon, but coastal towns should brace for a cooler day overall.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal will be the coldest province of the day. Morning fog patches will form in the west before giving way to a cloudy, cool-to-cool day. Isolated showers and rain are expected in most areas, except for the far north-west, which will remain partly cloudy.

Why These Forecasts Matter

South Africa’s inland provinces will enjoy fair, calm weather, but the coastal warnings highlight the dangers of spring swells. Small boat operators, fishermen, and coastal residents need to take the alerts seriously to avoid accidents.

Inland, Gauteng’s “very high” UVB index serves as a reminder that even pleasant weather carries hidden risks. Without protection, residents face the danger of sunburn and heat-related issues.

Most provinces will enjoy warm, fine conditions, but coastal regions must brace for rough seas, cold spells, and isolated showers. Whether you’re planning a beach outing in Durban, farming in Limpopo, or a busy city commute in Johannesburg, staying weather-aware will keep you prepared for the day ahead.
