As South Africa moves deeper into the spring-to-summer period, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts a fine, warm, and in some areas hot Friday for much of the country. Temperatures across Gauteng are expected to reach the high 20s and low 30s on 24 October 2025. After several chilly days, many will welcome the return of sunshine, but authorities caution that high UV levels and fire danger warnings remain in effect for certain regions.

Fire Danger Warnings Across Central South Africa

The western and north-western parts of the Free State and the eastern Northern Cape face extreme fire danger as hot, windy, and dry weather sweeps through these areas. These conditions can turn even the smallest spark into a runaway blaze, threatening homes, farms, and infrastructure.

Local authorities are urging communities to avoid open flames, postpone any controlled burning, and remain vigilant for signs of smoke or fire. The warnings highlight the growing risk of veld fires during this transitional season when dry grass and low humidity create the perfect conditions for flare-ups.

In Gauteng, the fire danger level remains moderate, but officials continue to remind residents that as vegetation dries out, it becomes increasingly flammable.

Gauteng: Warm to Hot With Intense Sun Exposure

Friday will bring warm to hot weather across Gauteng, with clear skies throughout the day. The northern parts of the province, including Hammanskraal and Pretoria North, will experience the hottest conditions. Johannesburg and the Vaal Triangle can expect highs between 27°C and 31°C.

The UVB sunburn index for the province is rated “very high,” which means direct exposure to sunlight can cause damage in a short time. Residents are encouraged to apply sunscreen frequently, wear hats and lightweight protective clothing, and stay hydrated, especially those working or commuting outdoors.

As summer approaches, heat exposure is becoming a real health concern. Adopting early summer habits like carrying water, staying out of direct sunlight during peak hours, and planning outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon will go a long way in preventing heat-related illness.

Provincial Forecast Summary – Friday, 24 October 2025

    Mpumalanga:
Fine and warm conditions, becoming hot to very hot in the Lowveld areas such as Nelspruit and Komatipoort.

    Limpopo:
A fine and warm to hot day ahead, with temperatures exceeding 34°C in Musina and Polokwane.

    North West:
Expect fine and hot weather with clear skies and minimal cloud cover. Rustenburg and Mahikeng will see highs in the low 30s.

    Free State:
Warm to hot across most regions. The western interior remains under high fire danger risk, and strong winds may worsen the situation.

    Northern Cape:
Partly cloudy in the central interior, otherwise fine, windy, and hot. Conditions will be most intense in Kimberley and Upington.

    Western Cape:
Cooler conditions along the coast, especially in Cape Town and Hermanus, while inland areas remain fine and warm. The northeast may see partly cloudy skies by afternoon. The UV index is very high across the province.

    Eastern Cape (Western Half):
Partly cloudy and warm, becoming hot inland near Graaff-Reinet.

    Eastern Cape (Eastern Half):
Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with cloudy coastal conditions around East London and Port St Johns.

    KwaZulu-Natal:
Fine and cool to warm conditions, with a refreshing coastal breeze expected in Durban. The Midlands will start cool before warming up later in the day.

Gauteng Gears Up for Early Summer

Gauteng is officially stepping into early summer, with longer days and higher temperatures. Parks, rooftop venues, and hiking trails will likely be buzzing as residents embrace the sunshine. However, these dry, warm spells often signal the start of thunderstorm season, which typically returns to the province in late October and November as humidity builds.

Environmental specialists are also warning of increased water usage during hot spells. Households are encouraged to conserve water and avoid unnecessary wastage, as warmer weather places pressure on municipal reservoirs.

The combination of heat and dryness makes this a crucial time for awareness and balance — enjoying the season while remaining mindful of the environmental impact.

A Bright Start to the Weekend

Friday’s forecast sets the tone for a sunny and pleasant weekend, with similar conditions expected on Saturday and Sunday. The clear weather will create ideal conditions for outdoor activities, family outings, and travel across the province.

For anyone spending extended periods outside:

    • Avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 and 15:00.
    • Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
    • Stay hydrated throughout the day.
    • Seek shade during peak heat periods.
    • Never leave children or pets in parked cars — even briefly.

    Stay Updated and Informed

SAWS continues to monitor the evolving conditions across the country, particularly over the fire-prone central regions. Residents can keep track of local forecasts and alerts through @SAWeatherServic on X (Twitter) or visit SAWS for detailed updates.

Gauteng Steps Boldly Into Early Summer

Friday, 24 October 2025, will deliver fine, warm to hot weather across South Africa. Gauteng’s clear skies promise the perfect start to the weekend, a reminder of both the beauty and intensity of Africa’s summer sun.

As the province gears up for outdoor adventures, residents are encouraged to enjoy the warmth responsibly: stay cool, stay hydrated, and make the most of a bright and sun-drenched Friday in Gauteng.
