Weather Alert: What to Expect This Weekend in Joburg and Pretoria

Gauteng Weekend Forecast

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says Gauteng residents can expect a warm weekend with a mix of sunshine and evening storms. Saturday offers a great chance to enjoy the outdoors, but clouds building up in the evening could disrupt plans. By Sunday, skies will clear, setting the stage for a dry and sunny end to the weekend.

According to SAWS, Saturday starts partly cloudy in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Temperatures will climb during the day, before evening showers and thundershowers hit around 8 pm. The forecast shows light rainfall of about 3mm, with a 30% chance of rain.

By contrast, Sunday promises clear blue skies and no rain across the province.

Pretoria: hot day with a chance of evening storms

Pretoria heats up early on Saturday. Temperatures will rise from about 19°C in the morning to 30°C by the afternoon before returning to 25°C at 8 pm. That’s when the storms are most likely to arrive.

Humidity begins at 50–55% in the morning, drops sharply to 20% by mid-afternoon, and climbs slightly to 25% in the evening. Those shifts create the perfect environment for quick bursts of showers.

The city’s minimum temperature is 15°C and the maximum at 30°C — a pleasant range for family outings. Still, anyone hosting evening events should keep umbrellas or gazebos on hand.

Winds will blow east north-east in the morning, shift north by midday, and turn north-north-east later in the evening. Speeds will stay around 10 knots during the day but ease to 5 knots at night.

Johannesburg Weather Forecast: cooler start, warm finish

Johannesburg follows a similar pattern, though with a slightly cooler start. Temperatures hover around 17–18°C in the early morning, climb to 28°C mid-afternoon, and settle at 23°C by 8 pm.

Saturday’s forecast lists a minimum of 14°C and a maximum of 29°C. Humidity mirrors Pretoria’s, starting at 50–55% before easing to 25–30% by afternoon.

At around 8 pm, residents should expect showers and thundershowers. SAWS predicts 3mm of rainfall with a 30% chance of storms. The timing means evening events — from football matches to concerts and braais — could face sudden interruptions.

Winds move from north-north-east in the morning to north during the day, and north-north-west by the evening. Speeds remain moderate at 5–10 knots.

Sunday Weather Forecast: Sunny and Sry

Sunday brings the calm after Saturday’s showers. Both Johannesburg and Pretoria will enjoy clear skies and dry conditions, with SAWS listing 0mm of rainfall and no chance of rain.

Pretoria’s temperatures will sit between 15°C and 30°C, while Johannesburg will see a range of 14°C to 29°C. With no rain in sight, Sunday is ideal for outdoor activities — from hiking trails and game drives to relaxed backyard braais.

Why this Weekend’s Weather Matters

Weather forecasts matter to Gautengers, especially on weekends packed with sports fixtures, weddings, markets, and family gatherings. Saturday’s warm weather makes it perfect for daytime plans, but the evening storms could throw a curveball for outdoor events. By Sunday, residents can look forward to sunshine without interruptions.

Spring in Gauteng often brings quick swings between heat and sudden storms. This weekend’s forecast captures that seasonal rhythm — a reminder for residents to stay prepared but still enjoy the outdoors.

Gauteng Weekend highlights:

  • Saturday: Hot and partly cloudy with thundershowers possible at 8 pm (30% chance of rain).
  • Pretoria: 15°C–30°C, winds shifting east-north-east to north-north-east, easing at night.
  • Johannesburg: 14°C–29°C, winds shifting north to north-north-west at 5–10 knots.
  • Sunday: Sunny, dry, and warm with highs around 29–30°C in both cities.
