Mamelodi Sundowns Face Setback as R30m Offer for Midfielder Rejected

Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered a setback in their transfer ambitions after seeing a big-money move turned down.
The Pretoria giants, who are determined to assemble a squad capable of conquering Africa in the CAF Champions League, have been relatively quiet in this transfer window. However, their latest attempt to inject fresh talent into the team has not gone according to plan.
Mamelodi Sundowns Target Slips Away
Reports from Brazil suggest that Sundowns tabled a R30 million bid for midfielder Matheusinho (full name Matheus Leonardo Sales Cardoso). Matheusinho is currently on the books of Portuguese side Santa Clara. Unfortunately for Masandawana, Santa Clara reportedly rejected the offer.
The 26-year-old playmaker is currently on loan at Club do Recife in Brazil, where he has been putting in strong performances. Recife, who hold the first option to buy him permanently, will also play a role in any potential transfer, further complicating Sundowns’ pursuit.
Despite the setback, the Betway Premiership champions are believed to still be keen on securing Matheusinho’s signature.
A Brazilian outlet, Diario de Pernambuco, confirmed that Sundowns’ initial offer amounted to €1.5 million (around R30 million). However, Santa Clara was not convinced.

What’s Next for Sundowns?
While the rejection represents a stumbling block, it is unlikely to deter coach Miguel Cardoso from strengthening his squad before the window closes.
Sundowns remain firm favourites in domestic football. However, their ultimate goal is continental dominance, something that requires both depth and quality in midfield.
The big question remains: Should Sundowns persist with their chase for Matheusinho? Or should they explore other international and local options?
