Mandela Day 2025: Five Organisations Changing Lives Across South Africa

Mandela Day 2025 on 18 July is a pivotal moment for South Africans to honour Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy. This year’s theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” inspires individuals, communities, and organisations to take meaningful action. Across the country, several impactful projects are underway. These projects are transforming lives in line with Madiba’s vision of dignity and justice.

    1. Mashup Westbury Youth Centre: Empowering Youth Through Skills and Entrepreneurship

The Mashup Westbury Youth Centre is a beacon of hope in a community plagued by unemployment, substance abuse, and violence. Located in Westbury, Johannesburg, this social innovation non-profit focuses on youth empowerment. It does so through an integrated ecosystem of programmes that combine education, skills training, and entrepreneurship.

Key pillars of the Westbury Youth Centre’s work include:

    • Education & Social Skills: Offering matric support, leadership development, anti-bullying awareness, career expos, and an integrated feeding scheme in local schools.
    • Sustainable Livelihoods: Providing career advice, life skills, job readiness programmes, computer training, agricultural and arts activities.
    • Entrepreneurship & Incubation: Training in digital skills, township economy, media, arts, and crafts, as well as performance and IT sectors.
    • Enterprise Development: Hosting projects such as an industrial kitchen for catering learnerships, a sanitary pad manufacturing initiative, upcycling crafts, and a small community gym.

Mashup recently launched a motorbike courier training programme in partnership with the Department of Social Development and MDS Collivery. This creates new employment pathways in logistics for unemployed youth.

This holistic approach nurtures employability, leadership, and social cohesion while tackling the urgent needs of Westbury’s young population. It is thus a flagship initiative in Mandela Day efforts to foster sustainable community upliftment.

    2. SOS Africa: Holistic Education for Disadvantaged Children

SOS Africa, a registered UK and South African non-profit organisation, delivers holistic education programmes to disadvantaged children across South Africa. Their approach nurtures the whole child — academically, emotionally, socially, and ethically.

SOS Africa’s Mandela Day initiative focuses on:

    • Providing daily nutritious meals to ensure children’s physical well-being supports effective learning.
    • Creating safe, stimulating learning environments with hands-on, sensory activities aligned with developmental stages.
    • Integrating practical skills like gardening, cookery, and creative arts to foster independence.
    • Supporting mental health with access to psychologists and social workers.
    • Encouraging growth mindset and perseverance (“grit”) to help children overcome challenges.
    • Celebrating individual talents and multiple intelligences, inspiring children to contribute positively to their communities.

SOS Africa’s work emphasises meeting basic needs as a foundation for education. By fostering wellbeing and practical skills, the organisation helps children build resilience and prepares them for future success. The holistic focus aligns strongly with Mandela’s vision of nurturing empowered, socially responsible citizens.

    3. Community Chest of the Eastern Cape: Trusted Partner for Sustainable Development

The Community Chest of the Eastern Cape, established in 1952, is a cornerstone in the province’s welfare sector. This non-profit organisation acts as an innovative solutions hub. It partners with corporate, foundation, and individual donors to support impactful social development programmes across the region.

Focused areas include education, health, skills development, nutrition, disaster management, and community development. The Chest ensures responsible giving through diligent vetting, monitoring, and impact assessment of projects it supports. Its transparent reporting system keeps donors informed of how their contributions are improving lives. It also offers tax benefits and a Level 1 BBBEE certification.

On Mandela Day, the Community Chest mobilises resources and stakeholders to strengthen social safety nets, promote nutrition and health services, and develop skills within vulnerable communities in Eastern Cape. By bridging donor intent with community needs, it fosters trust and accountability. These are key elements in driving lasting change and combating poverty.

    4. Ladles of Love: Nourishing South Africa’s Vulnerable Communities with Dignity and Sustainability

Ladles of Love is a prominent South African charity focused on more than just providing meals — it endeavours to promote dignity, respect, and sustainable upliftment for vulnerable people. Since its inception in 2014 by Cape Town restaurateur Danny Diliberto, the organisation has grown from a single soup kitchen serving 70 meals to providing nearly a million nutritious meals monthly.

    Their approach includes:

    • Supporting early childhood development (ECD) centres, mostly women-led, by supplying nutrient-rich meals to approximately 6,500 children under seven years old. Additionally, it supports their teachers and carers.
    • Operating Dignity Kitchens in Cape Town and Gauteng that serve regular wholesome meals to thousands of destitute and displaced individuals.
    • Empowering urban farmers and food entrepreneurs through sustainable food-growing initiatives that promote natural, economical methods under programmes like Feed the Soil and Realise A Dream.
    • Creating a comprehensive food relief network, partnering with over 200 beneficiary organisations across the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Gauteng.
    • Mobilising volunteers through acts of ‘Love Activism’, with opportunities ranging from meal preparation and delivery to fundraising and skills-based support.

Ladles of Love emphasises sustainable community development that empowers people to feed their families with dignity. Their initiatives focus on helping people thrive physically, emotionally, spiritually, and economically, reflecting Mandela’s spirit of compassion and service.

For those wishing to support or volunteer, Ladles of Love offers a variety of accessible options. This encourages South Africans from all walks of life to contribute towards this growing movement of kindness.

    5. Penreach: Advancing Educational Excellence in Mpumalanga

Penreach is a prominent non-profit organisation based in the Mpumalanga province. It is dedicated to improving education in disadvantaged communities. Through its experienced team of Change Agents, Penreach works closely with educators, school leaders, parents, and the Department of Education to build capacity and enhance learner outcomes from early childhood to Grade 12.

    Key programmes include:

    • Early Childhood Development (ECD): Closing the education gap for young children in under-resourced communities.
    • School Readiness Initiative: Ensuring all Grade R children have access to quality education by 2030.
    • Literacy and Numeracy Support: Empowering foundation phase stakeholders to promote a culture of reading and improve basic literacy skills.
    • School Leadership Development: Strengthening management disciplines that impact assessment performance.
    • STEAM Programmes: Raising Maths, Science, and Language achievement levels, and equipping learners with 21st-century skills.
    • Bursary Provision: Providing deserving learners access to quality private schools for their full education.
    • Teacher Development: Building the capacity of educators to transform school communities.
    • ArtReach and SportReach: Nurturing talents in rural schools through arts and sport.
    • Youth Work Experience: Offering opportunities for young, unemployed people to gain valuable skills.

Penreach’s mission focuses on providing access to quality education that fosters educational excellence for all South African children. Its programmes align with the national goal of having 90% of learners achieve above 50% in Maths, Science, and Language by 2030.

In place of traditional Mandela Day physical events, Penreach’s ongoing work embodies Mandela’s legacy through sustained educational development. It empowers communities to create lasting change.
